They had a lot of employees. That's going to suck.

But the sales should be great.

I heard 35k employees on this evening's news. I guess that it's time to redeem that gift card we've had for the last few months.

Yeah - terrible retailer we didn't need.

Also does anyone remember when Circuit City CHARGED YOU for a return?

A few years back, CC would charge you a "re-stocking fee" if you tried to return something opened, even if it was defective. To the tune of 25%.

Policies like that sealed this craphole's fate long before the current economic climate.

I also remember reading something 2 years ago (when the economy was fine) that CC decided to cut its on floor sales force by 45% - leading to zero customer service in giant big boxes... that's a recipe for disaster sooner or later.

This is natural - as we are over retailed in the US, a bit more retailers on the closing front and we should bottom out in 09.

Then we'll bounce back - hopefully in a more controlled and responsible manner.

I actually had bad experiences with returning things at Best Buy. My worst example was buying a CD there a few years ago. When I got to the parking lot, I noticed that the jewel case was cracked, so I went back into the store, grabbed another CD, and went to the service desk. Rather than simply swapping the CDs, they made me fill out a return form, and b/c I paid cash, gave me store credit... to take into the register line and buy the CD again!

Even up until last month, CC has been good to me. I had a pair of Shure headphones, which I use at work. After a year, the wiring became brittle and began to crack. Shure would only accept a return with a receipt, which I no longer had... so CC took them back and let me pick out comparable headphones from another manufacturer.

That being said, I think that Best Buy's customer experience has gotten better over the last year or two.

I chose not to use my dollars to vote for Circuit City many years ago. It was weird to see the sales people on the prowl like car salesmen.

I'm standing in line at Circuit City, ready to raid this beast, and do my part in its liquidation.

I went to Circuit City when it first opened, I think it was in the late 70s or early 80s? Anyway, they did not have any items that you could just pick up and take to the cashier, like any normal store. You had stand in one line to select your items, go to another line to pay and another line to pick them up!!! Needless to say, I did not ever return. Is it still like that?

I still will never forgive them for the loss of all the mom and pop electronic stores we had before. When Circuit City moved in, the prices were much lower, so in a few years, all the independent stores closed, which really sucked. Now, the only choice is Best Buy, or something like Target, Walmart, etc. There are no electronic stores left, at least in this area. Well, after CompUSA bought Good Guys then closed there was only Circuit City or Best Buy.

Oh well, thank god for Amazon.com.

Now if only Home Depot would go away so we could have hardware stores again. It's such fun driving 10 miles to buy a nail.
