Dear Metal Thread,
My boyfriend is really into Scandinavian prog metal like Opeth and Dark Tranquility. I'm trying to get into it a bit so that we can have some common ground musically (and I always like to expand my tastes), but it comes off kind of cheesy to me. I like my metal down and dirty and usually sludgy, and this stuff is just too clean. Do I just need to give it more time, or am I right and it's actually really cheesy?
pancakespancakes
05-18-2009, 03:33 PM
I am a big Opeth fan, (or was), but yes, I find that much of their work is way too clean and that is why I gravitate to it less and less as time goes on. Much of it just borders on the cheesy side unfortunately. But when it's good, it's great.
I think their album Blackwater Park, their most most famous album, may very well be their most sludgy as well. But I can't remember...
But no, I don't think it needs time. It is what it is.
Drinkey McDrinkerstein
05-18-2009, 03:41 PM

R3bvTRs7p74 I just sat here for 8 minutes waiting for this dildo to do something...WTF?
Suffacated met these guys at the Ozzfest one year. Motorgrater. He ended up befriending the lead singer, Ivan, and we followed him to afew LA shows. Plenty of stage makeup and theatrics, but unfortunately plenty of drama and politics broke them up. Huge bummer considering I had never quite experienced this type of metal before and actually liked them.
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/uWNAzMyDv58&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/uWNAzMyDv58&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
After Motorgrater split ways, Ivan, who has experience in everything from this screaming metal to church gospel, got together with some guys to form F.F.D.P. Because of Ivan, we followed them to the Key Club and Viper Room in LA, House of Blues in San Diego, and last year drove to Las Vegas to see them in some local dive bar to a packed house.
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/415441ncq1A&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/415441ncq1A&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Pretty amazing to have watched these guys grow in fanbase and we certainly wish we could continue following them...We just can't afford Europe just yet! I came acrossed one video that regardless of the metal and screaming, I was simply in tears watching the enormous crowd in attendance! To the top, you KNUCKLEHEADS!!!

So there is a rumor floating around of a Metallica/Megadeth/Anthrax/Slayer tour
hopefully it's true
Kerry King said this
"I’ve heard people referencing Lars,” says King. “I don’t know Lars that well and I haven’t heard it from Lars but apparently he’s talking to somebody about it. Maybe us, Metallica, Megadeth (and), I think he even threw in Anthrax and I said in this day and age, I know we had that time together but how do you leave out Machine Head? There’s better options than Anthrax and that’s nothing against Anthrax, but they’ve just been in pieces for quite some time and that doesn’t make as much sense to me."

So I was really hoping to do Roadburn this year especially after I saw what the lineup was so far:
Enslaved, Trinacria, Dream of An Opium Eater, Goatsnake, YOB doing 2 sets, Mouth Of The Architect, Triptykon, Thorr’s Hammer, Comus, Master Musicians of Bukkake, Karma To Burn, Shrinebuilder, Moss, Altar of Plagues, Brant Bjork & The Bros, Yakuza, Nachtmystium,
Candlemass will perform their classic album, “Epicus Doomicus Metallicus” in its entirety with Johan Längquist on vocals. There will be a special part of the set that incorporates new singer Robert Lowe as well
Enslaved/Shining (NO), playing their Armageddon concerto
Tom Gabriel Warrior, founder of the illustrious Hellhammer and Celtic Frost, has agreed to act as the curator for our festival on Friday, and host a special event at Roadburn, called Only Death Is Real.
then I saw the dates are the same as Coachella

i used to like Throwdown. They were ahead of the curve as far as new school tough guy hardcore was concerned, a lot better than Hatebreed and the ilk
Paul, if you're looking for metal-tinged hardcore like Throwdown, check out On Broken Wings and Remembering Never. RN's album "women and children die first" is especially good
some new actual hardcore records i've been digging lately are "miscarriage" by Virgins (ex-New Mexican Disaster Squad) and "hell is empty" from Ruiner.
As for metal, got the new Between The Buried and Me but haven't listened to it yet
@Stinkbutt regarding Baroness - yes, that track sounds very Alice In Chains thanks to the vocal harmonies...very "jar of lifes" era AIC
@MuseRadio - I was practically rail for Mastodon's performance of "crack the skye" at Coachella and it was brilliant! I'll be at the 11/20 palladium show as well. I'm a bit peeved their pretty much still just doing CTS, but I only paid $10 for the ticket after fees and i'm stoked on Converge, High On Fire, and Dethklok too. I've been able to see Mastodon tour for every album since remission so i have seen almost every song they've done life save for Lifesblood/Call of the mastodon stuff

The Slayer and Megadeth US tour has been put to rest. The tour was officially cancelled today because singer Tom Arraya needs urgent back surgery.
Australia was lucky. The tour did make it down under but the US dates to promote the new Slayer album ‘World Painted Blood’ happened later.
The US, Canadian and European dates for the tour have now all been shelved.
Here is the official announcement:
"Tom gave various medical treatments more than a fair shot," said Slayer's manager Rick Sales, "but they just haven't handled the problem, so he's biting the bullet and is scheduled for back surgery at the end of this month."
This difficult decision made by the band's bassist/vocalist Tom Araya means the cancellation of Slayer's immediate tour plans that include the American and Canadian Carnage Tour dates that were set to kick off on January 18, as well as the band's UK/European headline tour scheduled for March and April. Booking agents for both Slayer and Megadeth are already hard at work rescheduling the tour dates; tickets already purchased for these shows will be honored at the rescheduled dates.
Disappointing.
