I went and saw Spiritualized in L.A. in September (another myspace secret show), got there about 12 noon and was the first one in line. Didn't have to bring any kind of printout.

Just sat there and talked with fellow fans all day, drank sparks, smoked cigarettes, pretty much all there is to do on a sidewalk in front of a venue all day.

They passed out wristbands at around 6 from what I remember, show was at 8. Something like that.

By 6 the line was wrapped around the block, and since not everyone got a wristband I'm sure people were turned away that really wanted to go.

For me, it was absolutely worth it to get there that early. And Deerhunter's like 100x more popular than Spiritualized right now, so I'd head over to the venue pretty quick if I were you. I was RIGHT up against the stage, front center, no barrier. I could have reached out and touched the lead singer's guitar if I wanted to.

People didn't really start showing up until around 2-3, if I remember correctly though. Probably about 20 people in line before then.

But yeah, GO for sure if you don't have work or something else you have to do! You'll be super glad you did.

Glad you made it Zenidogx. I was beat from the night before and just lollygagged after seeing only a few people in line on my way home from work. After chilling at home I caught a 2nd wind and walked over. Got there at 8:30pm, 30min after doors and the line was around the corner. Gave it 15 min, then the bouncer announced it was at capacity. Oh well, I got a good fix on Tuesday night. I think I might have been pretty annoyed at all the drunk teenagers at the Rickshaw too. Just standing there, in line, I had two f*cks walk right into me. They were both probably 17-19 years old and sh*tfaced, trying really hard to be cool. When I walked home I was pretty content that I didn't get in.

Anyone interested in Deerhunter should most definitely check out that live video. The sound and video both seem professionally done, and you'll get a good sense of where they're at live right now. They are scarily good.

Salah, watch the first 10 minutes. It's a revamped version of the first two songs from Cryptograms, their second album. It sounds fantastic.

Bradford posted this on the blog, in the comments for his latest mix, in regards to why they're a four piece again:

Whitney is M.I.A. she rides motorcycles to weird places and loses her cellphone. a lot. We will be a four-piece again for now. Whitney is what you would call a "free spirit." She's also a great friend. Deerhunter is the four of us. We might have people come and go and that's just how we keep things interesting for ourselves. We don't need to explain it that much. Just go with the flow. Hope everyone has a nice weekend.

Geez, I think if I had the opportunity to play regularly in Deerhunter, I wouldn't be such a free spirit.

bmack, how much different is the live sound with a 4-piece instead of a 5? Because I strangely like (videos I've seen of) The Cure more as a 4-piece than a 5-piece.

I'm not Salah, but I saw a little bit of the beginning then stopped myself. I've never seen ANY live video of theirs and I think i'm gunna keep it like that. Make it a nice surprise, you know?

Also, not that it matters but the lead singer IS gay right? It's just always awesome to have an openly gay frontman for a group that totally rocks

Depends on what 5-piece era you're looking at. When it was Bradford/Lockett/Josh/Moses/Colin, Bradford didn't play guitar and Colin made them much noisier, more art-damaged and loose. When he left, it seemed like that kicked them in the side and made them really work on band interplay. I saw them once as a 4-piece with the current lineup, and they were still working on developing their current live sound. The shows I saw with Whitney replacing Colin were fantastic, but I don't know how much she actually added to the sound. For the most part it seemed like she was just doubling Bradford's guitar work in case he dropped out and filling for him when he went to the keyboards, bells or his amp. This show sounds similar to what they did with Whitney, only better (which I keep thinking shouldn't be possible).

He's never specifically said he's gay vs. straight. He's very definitely bi, and probably gay.

I was shocked watching this video and seeing how healthy he looks. He doesn't have the strung-out, overexerted and underrested look that I've come to associate with Bradford Cox.

When Bradford had no guitar duties, he spent most of the show deep throating the microphone.

Thank you for the info, sounds like they've adapted nicely. Hope I get the chance to see them at Coachella, this video is superb.

I've only gotten into Microcastle of their material (and absolutely love it), what's my next step?

bmack86
03-02-2009, 12:31 PM
Weird Era Cont., which is the second disc that comes with Microcastle. It's another fantastic album that they recorded after Microcastle leaked early. After that, go backwards. Start with Atlas Sound-Let The Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel (Bradford's solo album), then do Cryptograms and Flourescent Grey in one sitting, because they flow well together. Turn it Up Faggot isn't essential by any means (hardly anyone even knows it exists) but it's still a fun listen. Also, Lockett, who plays guitar, has an album coming out under the name Lotus Plaza. It's leaked, and it's really good and similar to Microcastle stuff.

Bmack, I'd have to respectfully disagree with you here. I really think you need to hit Cryptograms immediately after Microcastle, JSam. I'd say it's almost as quality of an album as Microcastle and it's probably a bit more accessible than Weird Era Cont.

The first half of the album is a bit difficult and on the "experimental" side, but the second half is full of big wonderful anthems along the lines of Microcastle. Even though I definitely prefer Microcastle, two out of my three favorite Deerhunter songs are actually both on this album, and they go back-to-back in wonderful succession, Spring Hall Convert and Strange Lights. If anything, just skip ahead to those two tracks, then listen to the rest of the album after you've listened to them ten times in a row.

Probably a personal bias of some sort, I dunno. I just love Cryptograms. I never got that into Weird Era Cont much.

Deerhunter wasn't as great as I would have hoped when they came to El Paso. They played at one of our absolute worst venues, and they didn't play "Agoraphobia," and because they played at a bad venue, they got the bad crowd that it comes with... It didn't help that the week before, Deerhoof played at one of El Paso's finer venues, and played an excellent set for an intimate and excellent crowd.

I have to admit when Microcastle first came out, I didn't like it very much. It could have been the hype behind the album, or maybe I didn't listen to it properly, but I love it now. Microcastle/Weird Era are both amazing albums, Very happy they are playing Street Scene/Detroit bar soon. Anyone going to the Detroit Bar show?
