Drum roll: The fourth annual Pitchfork Music Festival will take place in Chicago July 17-19. So cancel that "screw the recession" European vacation ASAP-- it's not worth it. The Pitchfork Music Festival, on the other hand, is definitely worth it. Not like we're biased or anything. The three-day fest will once again take place at Chicago's lovely Union Park, so get ready to gawk at the coolest sunglasses you've ever seen while soaking in the finest music known to man...on earth...and in space. It will be mega.
Tickets go on sale Friday, March 13.
I know what you're thinking: "So which incredibly awesome bands are going to be there this year?" Slow down. We can't give everything away at once. Stay tuned to this space for a regular stream of festival updates in the coming weeks. While you're waiting, go ahead and check out Deerhunter's Bradford Cox performing with Spoon from last year's show or Girl Talk doing that thing he does with special guests Grizzly Bear at the '07 fest over at Pitchfork.tv.
But feel free to circle and/or highlight July 17, 18, and 19 on your cat-a-day calendar this very second.

This topic will become far more relevant to my interest when those hipster fucks release the lineup.
Somehow I think they will manage to find a way to get Animal Collective to headline both nights, Jack Johnston style.

And if Portishead plays, same deal. Unless they announce a full tour.

Barring financial problems, I'll be there. This is such a great weekend. The after parties are a blast, the festival is expertly run, the food is fantastic and they have microbrews for the beers. I have absolutely no complaints about this the two years I've been.
Boredoms headlining one night. It's a guess, but I could see them doing that.

And also, I've heard people complain that there aren't (or weren't, the trend is changing) any current new acts that are headliner material. I love that Spoon and Animal Collective were their two regular headliners last year. And it sold out.

I want to say 3 bucks per, but it might have been 4. Very affordable. And, once people are drunk, they give away extra beer tickets. It's happened to me both years.

BENEFITS OF GOING:
1. Going.
2. Going to Chicago---a place I've never been.
3. I will be 21 long before then.
4. Another AC show to add to my AC-full year, perhaps?
5. Swindling my way onto the P4K staff.
6. PRESS PASS.
7. Party.
BENEFITS OF NOT GOING:
1. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Hm. I'll wait for the lineup.

Oh fuck you. This is always the go-to explanation for when somebody is telling it like it is. Maybe you and Kitt Kat should realize you come across as complete morons and all the shit you get from it has nothing to do with whether or not anybody is "miserable." Maybe you really ARE that fucking stupid and the person telling you this is completely happy. Go start another thread in which you tell everyone how desperate you are for a girlfriend. Better yet, go criticize another board member for meeting his girlfriend through the boards. Even though you didn't have the necessary game, or even a hint of personality, to even have a fighting chance of getting her. You creepy fuck.
Oh and Portishead would maybe get me to this, though my festival schedule is looking crazy booked.

It rains in Chicago in the summer? Blech. I'm not a rain person whatsoever.
I have been going to Pitchfork every year since it started as the Intonation festival. Out of the 4 years and 8 days I've been it only rained for half of a day this year. It was actually a complete relief from the heat and not a problem whatsoever as the mud was very easily avoidable.
Pitchfork is one of my favorite festivals as it provides an amazing counter-point to a fest like Coachella. It is cheap as hell (literally the first year was $35 for two days!, now it's like $50 for 2 but still), the crowds are small and very easy to deal with, and there is also very little conflict due to there being a maximum of two stages going at once. I can't speak highly enough about the way it is run and the chill atmosphere of the festival. Great indie bands, good food and yes cheap beer ($4 or $5 I think, not for a 12oz glass either).
Not to rain on any parades but I doubt they get Portishead. This festival does not draw big acts as headliners, but with Pitchfork you never know so until we see a lineup I do think speculation is fair. Hopefully they will announce some details at their SXSW party like they do most years, they usually release their lineup over a period of time.
Seriously go to this if you can, I have never been to Lolla but I hear from those who have been to both that they enjoyed Pitchfork more, especially compared to the cost. Plus chicago is one of the greatest cities in the nation. Please when anyone has it post details of a possible lineup, I will for sure be attending this year due to all the reasons I have previously stated.

I'm considering going to this if I like the lineup as much or better than Lollapalooza's. If it was last year, I would have definitely gone to Lolla. But I'll be heading to Chicago this summer for a music festival no matter what and I think I'd prefer going to Pitchfork, just because of how small-scale and well-run it is.

hipster.
hahaha yeah you got me there :rotfl
Fun fact, urban dictionary currently lists 118 definitions for hipster. A couple of my faves:
"Kind of like an Emo kid who never really grew out of it."
"1. A self-aggrandizing piece of hypocrisy.
2. Consumer.
3. A sector of the "enlightened" mass culture."
"Black frame glasses wearing, java drinking, converse all-star wearing, bike riding, indie listning, underground club going, white belt and 3 shirt sizes too small wearing, non showering, mommy and daddy grubing, record store working, pabst blue ribbon drinking, smoothie sipping, tight black jean wearing, Williamsburg BK living......Poser"
And my personal favorite: "someone who flaunts cigarettes."
That really made for some entertaining reading. Yeah pitchfork is full of these kids although I guess I'm not really one exactly. Especially when it comes to cigarettes and tight fitting pants.

You're right there's no way...Portishead would fill that park in a heartbeat...
From everything that I have read, Portishead is relaxing before recording another album, which supposedly they will follow up with a proper tour.
Though, if this were true and Portishead was doing a one-off then I think its about time my wife got to see Chicago.

Reunited Jesus Lizard to open Pitchfork festival with set list handpicked by fans
The reunited Jesus Lizard will play its first hometown show in 11 years July 17 at the Pitchfork Music Festival in Union Park, promoters will announce Friday.
The noise-rock quartet broke up in 1999, but the original lineup of David Yow, Duane Denison, David Wm. Sims, and Mac McNeilly has announced plans to play a handful of shows this year while their label, Touch & Go, reissues much of their back catalogue.
The Jesus Lizard will be part of an opening-night festival lineup that also includes Built to Spill, Tortoise and Yo La Tengo. Each of the bands will play a set handpicked by fans. Anyone who buys a ticket starting March 13 will receive an email providing a link to a web page where they can vote on which songs they’d like to hear each band perform. Voting will end June 12.
Other bands and artists confirmed for the festival include the National, Pharoahe Monch and the Pains of Being Pure at Heart on July 18 and Grizzly Bear, the Walkmen and Vivian Girls on July 19.
Additional bands for the fourth annual festival will be announced later.

Please see the whole tornado warning thign that happend the day after Lolla ended and they had to like cancel all flights at the airports and the cubs game was delayed for a while etc etc. That mornign before it all went down, Im taking the rental car I had for the weekend back to the place which was up the street wher eI was staying. So I drop it off, outside its a little cloudy but nothing crazy, within those 10 minutes of me being in the place and signing a couple of forms and making sure all my stuff was out of the car, it turns dark and it starts pouring rain. Then above tornado warning thing happens later in the afternoon, luckily I was flying out from wisconsin so I missed it all and no flight delays and snags like everyone else in chicago.

I'm trying to decide on the songs I want to vote for for this. This is going to be really, really fun though.
My favorite Tortoise song is one of their more famous songs, TNT, but they actually don't play it live at all of their shows... so I'm thinking I'll just vote for that. But I also have to hear Djed live before I die.
My favorite Yo La Tengo song they wouldn't otherwise play is probably Moby Octopad. I would also kill to hear Pass the Hatchet live. So maybe I should just vote for that one.
As for Jesus Lizard... I'm only really a huge fan of Goat, so anything off of there, but in particular Mouth Breather or Romeo in Joliet. Still getting to their other albums now...
And Built to Spill I'm a pretty casual fan so I don't have much to say there. My favorite song of their's is probably Velvet Waltz.

I'd bet good amounts of money that, due to the fact that they're one of the voting bands, the Jesus Lizard will play a set that consists almost solely of material off of Goat and Liar.

Hmmm the more I think about it, the more disinterested I am in the line-up. While it's a good line-up, the only bands I'm interested in that I haven't already seen are the Jesus Lizard (whom I'll be seeing at ATP New York) and Pains of Being Pure at Heart. I really hope they add a few others besides the Lips tomorrow. Still that's a big step up from the likes of Sonic Youth and Public Enemy.

Honestly, the Friday for me, if all four bands are indeed on one stage one-after-the-other, is worth how ever much it costs to go to Chicago in and of itself. I have almost as much in that day as I do the whole weekend of Coachella...
bmack86
04-10-2009, 07:24 PM
Staggered stages on friday. They're catty corner to eachother. If you stay reasonably back for both all you have to do is turn left or right to have the same view of both stages. Or you can camp at the front of one stage and watch from a somewhat odd angle for the other.
Or just go up to the front since it's pretty easy to do at this one.

Sweet! Then I won't really worry about hostel location. And yeah then I actually might have a free place to stay out there too if a friend of mine is living in Chicago by then, which I don't know for sure yet.
But this is going to be so deliciously inexpensive for me. Not to mention the fest itself is only like 10-20K people. Which is exactly why I am doing Pitchfork instead of Lolla.
Ticket + Airfare + Accomadations = under $400 total trip!

And they get all the beer from the Goose Island microbrewery in Chicago. I think they had four different types. I remember a hefeweisen, a Pale Ale and an IPA, and there was also a Lager I think. It was 4 bucks last year. You had to get tickets for beer and water and gatorades. Each ticket was 2 bucks, and 2 tickets for beer. Food is done without tickets. You can walk around with beer anywhere, and there are two or three tents that sell it. It's awesome.

You lucky bastards ought to vote for "Marching The Hate Machines Into The Sun". I'm almost entirely sure the Flips have never played that song live, and it would be fucking awesome to hear.

I didn't realize Flaming Lips were a voting set? If so, I'm praying for "Jesus Shooting Heroin," "Oh My Pregnant Head," "Slow Nerve Action," "Brainville," "The Spark That Bled," . . . this could go on for a long time.
Oh. And please vote for "Damage" by Yo La Tengo.

I didn't realize Flaming Lips were a voting set?
Pitchfork just announced it today
http://pitchfork.com/news/35258-the-flaming-lips-to-take-requests-for-2009-pitchfork-music-festival-set/
We'll pleased to announce that the Flaming Lips have decided that they will, in fact, take requests during their headlining set at the 2009 Pitchfork Music Festival. On Sunday, July 19, the Lips will play selected songs chosen by fans in the "Write the Night" format. "The Lips are more than glad to be part of 'Write the Night', Wayne Coyne says. "They will do their best to accommodate the wildest and most obscure of request-- covers included." All ticket buyers, including those who have already purchased, will be sent a link via email and have the chance to vote on requests. Hooray!
Ticket buyers can go online and "Write the Night" by voting for the set list of their dreams for the bands performing on Friday night as well. Friday's performers include Built to Spill, Tortoise, Yo La Tengo and the Jesus Lizard. Those who have already purchased a ticket but have yet to vote should be sure to check their purchase confirmation email for a link to the polls. Voting ends June 12.
In other Pitchfork Music Festival news, three-day passes are now sold out! Individual day passes, as well as two-day passes for Saturday and Sunday, are still available but going fast, so don't miss out! Tickets can be purchased right here. For more information, head on over to the Pitchfork Music Festival website.

If you can go up to 10 add the following
Big Dipper
Untrustable
Carry the Zero
Sidewalk

And then these too
In the Morning
Distopian Dream Girl
I Would Hurt A Fly
Kicked it in the Sun

I'm not that familiar with ...Yo La Tengo
I am only familiar with as far back as 1993's Painful. I might should venture further back because that is my favorite album of theirs.
Also my picks are very much focused on their noisy, extended rockers side.
If you get to pick just five
Sudden Organ
Blue Line Swinger
Sugarcube
Autumn Sweater
Pass the Hatchet I Think I'm Goodkind
If you get to pick more
Big Day Coming
Pablo and Andrea
You Can Have It All
Today Is the Day
Night Falls on Hoboken
Sometimes I don't Get You
The Story of Yo La Tango

The way they have it set up is you can put a check next to any song from under any album it doesn't seem like there is a limit on the number of songs.

Built to Spill - Perfect From Now On or Keep it Like A Secret have become favorites of mine in the last couple months, the former especially, and they are records that anyone could really enjoy.
The other bands' classics are
Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One
Tortoise - TNT
The Jesus Lizard - Goat

I'm curious to see how this works out. are they going to just take the 16 most voted for songs? depending on the demographic that could work out to just be a greatest hits set. but at pitchfork I guess we will have a lot of elitists that will only vote for songs from before they were popular. interesting.

Soft Bulletin and then covers, thats what it should be.
bmack86
05-09-2009, 06:05 PM
I bet because it's pitchfork's crowd, you'll have a song or two from Yoshimi, maybe one song from the newest one, lots of The Soft Bulletin and Transmissions, and at least one from Zaireeka, because it's so goddamn hipster to ask for the weird one.
SoulDischarge
05-09-2009, 06:08 PM
"Jesus Shooting Heroin" is my big before-they-were-big-obscure-hipster-super-fan song that I want them to play. But yeah, lots of Transmissions, Clouds Taste Metallic, and Soft Bulletin would be a dream. Although one of my favorites from Clouds, "Lightning Strikes The Postman," is already a staple.

I can guarantee that the ATP set, were it to be request-based, would be the most ridiculously obscure set. Pitchfork will be close though.

And the Glass Handed Kites.
Tracks 4-7.

And I'm really hoping for What is the Light? and A Spoonful Weighs a Ton from the FLips. I've a feeling my choices will be less obscure than many. I still have never heard Yoshimi pt. 2 and have always wished to be crushed by it someday.
