View Full Version : Am I Underestimating the heat?

This year Coachella doesn't seem like its going to be as hot as everyone has been saying in past years. It's even raining in Indio the friday before Coachella. And according to the forecast it may not even get above 90 degrees Coachella weekend.
I'm from the San Fernando Valley where it gets over tripple digits in the summer, so if the forecast I am using as my info is accurate I dont think I'll need to go to all the extremes that I've been told to to beat the heat.
Maybe I'm being Naive but here's the link to the forecast for Indio for the month.

It's a week or two earlier this year. It seems it usually falls on the first hot weekend of the year. Last year, it topped 100 on Saturday.
I would expect it to be much nicer this year, but even at 85 instead of 100, don't underestimate what that will do to you when you're out in it 3 days straight. Stay hydrated.

its really not as bad as people make it seem. I have come from snow the past two year to coachella and been fine without sunscreen or never been dehydrated before. I think people are just way over dramatic about it.

It may be cooler this year, but don't underestimate the power of the sun to give you a fantastic burn. The last thing you want is to get burned the first day.

It's fucking hot out there, and the sun is brutal-style. Don't underestimate it. I always make sure to seek shade early in the afternoon in gobi/mojave/sahara tents, do lab, etc. I'm from phoenix, I know how bad the sun will fuck you up, but it's not bad if you plan right and have water, sunscreen, hat, etc.

headstruck, you and I seem similar here- I love the heat, I don't feel the dehydration, and I've gone whole days without sunscreen, but I'd still advise people to protect themselves and stay hydrated, especially their first time. let them feel out their limits. my friend last year ended up in the medic tent for most of sunday even without smoking, drinking, or taking any drugs

07 was the hottest year in my opinion. that was just straight brutal! 05 was pretty killer too. i think this year will be refreshingly nice i hope they keep it around this time every year from now on. Im overestimating the heat to be prepared as always. Last year when it wasnt SO bad it was still super nice to have batter powered mister fans and shit to stay nice and cool. and of course the do lab hooks it up with a nice soak down in the middle of the afternoon while is always reinvigorating. That new art exhibit this year thats a big mister is gunna be way sick!!!
Cant fucking wait for Coachella! Wish i was out there right now!!!! *gets back to ignoring homework and lifes responsabilities*

it basically feels the same out there as it does here so you don't have to do anything. Last year it was actually hotter here in SFV than it was at Coachella. The biggest difference is it actually gets humid here, whereas it's just dry in Indio. You have nothing to worry about

you are underestimating it, temperature =/= uv rays! unless you like the idea of skin cancer, sunburn, or happen to tan like someone for brazil use that shit. and while sitting outside for 30 minutes may not seem bad, dancing at shows with people surrounding you in 90 degree weather is a surefire way to dehydration. just make sure you have at least a 1/2 water bottle with you before you goto any show, or youll regret it later.

pot calling the kettle black? since you seem keen on being a douche, let me correct your syntax and grammar as well.
a killer? what killer? the phrase "a killer" implies that "killer" is a noun and not an adjective. however, you WERE using "killer" as an adjective (which describes the noun, in case you didn't know).
you really shouldnt use the word "because" twice in one sentence... it makes you appear like a fucking moron. anyone who went to grade school knows better than this.
if your going to type in initial caps, you might want to try and be consistent by capitalizing ALL of the words that begin a sentence. otherwise, you just end up looking like the cunt you are.
in other words... unless you type with 100% proper grammar and syntax, STFU UP!

the dictionary doesn't take into consideration the entire sentence that was used, miscrosoft word does. the dictionary shows a single example where the wording is different, making it non-applicable to the situation in question.

that makes sense. i think headstruck was making more comments about people saying IT IS SO HOT when it's only ever, say, 110 max. it's pretty hot, but if you're from the midwest and used to humidity, or from arizona, the central valley in CA, etc. etc. it won't be that much different from your summer weather.
i always complain about the heat but i'm used to much cooler weather. headstruck and i are friends and he still makes fun of me and calls me a baby when i talk to him about how hot it's going to be. i don't think he was being that serious, but more people know him around here since he is a regular poster so i think they didn't take so much offense to it.

Just make sure to drink alot of water, reapply your sunscreen and find shade whenever possible, which isn't that hard. There is also a big misting system that I read about in another thread that sounds wonderfly refreshing. I also kept a bandana last year that whenever I would go get water from a vendor (or beer) they would dip the bandana in ice water for me and I kept that wrapped around my neck during the day. Keeps the body temp down pretty well.

Even though I had applied it prior I must have sweat it off in the process of the 13 hour concert and ended up having almost third degree burns on my face and legs... terrible. Stupidity of being 18.
Remember Bob Marley died of skin cancer... something to think about :P

Hopefully this will clear things up for you:
The sun is a mass of incandescent gas
A gigantic nuclear furnace
Where hydrogen is built into helium
At a temperature of millions of degrees
Yo ho, it's hot, the sun is not
A place where we could live
But here on Earth there'd be no life
Without the light it gives
We need its light
We need its heat
We need its energy
Without the sun, without a doubt
There'd be no you and me
The sun is a mass of incandescent gas
A gigantic nuclear furnace
Where hydrogen is built into helium
At a temperature of millions of degrees
The sun is hot
It is so hot that everything on it is a gas: iron, copper, aluminum, and many others.
The sun is large
If the sun were hollow, a million Earths could fit inside. And yet, the sun is only a middle-sized star.
The sun is far away
About 93 million miles away, and that's why it looks so small.
And even when it's out of sight
The sun shines night and day
The sun gives heat
The sun gives light
The sunlight that we see
The sunlight comes from our own sun's
Atomic energy
Scientists have found that the sun is a huge atom-smashing machine. The heat and light of the sun come from the nuclear reactions of hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, and helium.*

Who knew grammar would be such a hot topic? Intriguing subject matter.
If you do get dehydrated or feel like you are on your way, sip on a bottle of 1/2 Gatorade and 1/2 water slowly and stay in the shade for a bit. Then continue to drink water and wear a hat or stay in the shade. That is what the medics prescribed to a member of our group last year when he was feeling "rough in the sun" on Sunday. I guess sugary electrolytes are just the thing.

Nothing is your enemy more than heat stroke, IMO. Drink water constantly. ALWAYS have a bottle with you.
I missed all of Rapture and most of LCD in 2007 due to a killer headache, even though I did the above... it was just really, really hot.
and make sure you wear lots of sunscreen.
bummer man, those were good sets. but yeah, collect empty bottles if you don't have cash (I don't even know if they are still doing that this year)

pot calling the kettle black? since you seem keen on being a douche, let me correct your syntax and grammar as well.
a killer? what killer? the phrase "a killer" implies that "killer" is a noun and not an adjective. however, you WERE using "killer" as an adjective (which describes the noun, in case you didn't know).
you really shouldnt use the word "because" twice in one sentence... it makes you appear like a fucking moron. anyone who went to grade school knows better than this.
if your going to type in initial caps, you might want to try and be consistent by capitalizing ALL of the words that begin a sentence. otherwise, you just end up looking like the cunt you are.
in other words... unless you type with 100% proper grammar and syntax, STFU UP!
Hokay, so... Besides that being completely pointless, you missed the possibility that "a killer sunburn" mite be a classification of sunburn she made up on the spot. That's the only thing that sounded like nails to a chalk board to me so carry on.

1) drink water keep hydrated. exertion as much as heat can cause problems. I know because I fainted on a ski slope in the snow once.
2) weather can change quickly in indio. temps going hot one day and cold the next.
my bet is for early saturday morning winds similar to those which hit the area in march.
but then i think there will be another 4.0 earthquake in the region saturday too . which will go unnoticed by those dancing nearest one of the stages.
p.s. if you are a member of the grammar police go lock yourself up. feel free all

The lack of shade, the body heat and enclosed plastic tents... you'll be sweating, trust.
Yes, you will definitely sweat, but there are plenty of places to chill out and cool down in the shade. I recommend the do lab oasis. get misted while you dance to the dub sauce

Also, the worst part for me every year is waking up in your oven of a tent. It seems to be impossible to sleep in when the sun is baking you inside your tent in the mornings. But, it is earlier this year, so maybe that part won't be so bad. I'm crossing my fingers

dont trust the weather forcast until the day of...i've been check for the past 4 days and it keeps going up and up.
i went in 07' stayed in the shade, had sunscreen on and cool color clothing and i did fine. got a tan but thats about it.
i've also lived in the coachella valley all my life and keep in mind when they say its 95 degrees thats ONLY in the shade. standing under the sun is a different story.
anyways the point is its gonna be hot but dont over think it just wear comfortable light clothes and drink plenty of liquids and take a sweater if your planning to stay after the sun goes down because it can get cold all of a sudden.

it doesn't get "humid" in the valley
ive been here for a bit after moving from the mississippi delta. sure it may not reach 117 there, but at 109degrees & 98% humidity. that's death.
i will admit the sun can be more brutal out here, as it doesn't have inifinite layers of moisture, amongst other things, blocking it
