This is my first year. How many sets can I reasonably expect to get to in a day?

In the past I would say 4-6 near full/full sets. You have to count time to eat and whatnot.
Things will be a little different this year. Less overlapping should mean longer sets for the bands, but should still put you at 4-6 for the day. Unless you want to just keep running around and catching a few songs of more bands, but I personally find that to be a shitty idea.

people who park it at the main stage most of the day are secretly dubbed 'melanomers'.

hey this reminds me.
How much time does it take the transition between bands in the same stage?
are there bands playing non stop at all stages at all times?

Depending on what time you get to the fields and take for wandering, eating, etc., you can probably catch btwn 7-10 full sets. The way the grounds are set up, you can really get from one stage to another one in about 3 minutes (about one song).
If I remember correctly, it takes between 15-30 minutes for the transitioning between sets. There are gaps between acts, but they schedule it so that you can always see somebody (bands start at slightly different times on different stages).

Dammit, now I really want to see a picture of both last year's dog set times and a picture of fober rocking out to James Blunt.
It is a travesty that these things do not exist.

I've only ever been to the festival once, the saturday in 05, I was curious so I looked at the poster for that day and apparently I saw:
Coldplay- Full
Bauhuas- Full
Weezer- Full
Wilco- 3/4 set
Keane- Full
Snow Patrol- Full
Rilo Kiley- 1/2
Ravonettes- 1/2
Jamie Cullum- Full
Stereophonics- 3/4
Nic Armstrong and the Thieves- Full
Sexy Magazines- Full
8 full sets and 4 partial, not too bad.

I say 10 full if you can schedule properly. The most acts I have seen in a weekend including partial sets was in 2005, 27....

Thanks for posting the set times Vinyl. Apart from getting a great idea of how much moving around you have to do to see who you want, it emphasized for me how much better this year's lineup is!
