I am a much bigger Floyd fan and I ended up staying the whole McCartney set, cant be said about Water's set. Paul could still sing, Water's not so much.

this pretty much sums up the difference between the 2. Roger Waters had a pre set list and an entire stage show and production to go with it. Paul McCartney is an actual performer and would improvise and change songs and set list if needed. So I can't really vote in this. Roger Waters put on a much better "show" but McCartney had a much better PERFORMANCE..and for 67 Paul can sing better then most lead singers half his age!

Waters was leagues above Paul - not even close. I grew up listening to the Beatles and had high hopes for McCartney's set, but his performance seemed like the kind of thing that'd be right at home on cruise ship or some shitty Vegas casino. Quite possibly the most dissapointing live music experience in my life.

Based on songs alone and not special effects to stimulate those under the influence of hallucinogens: Paul McCartney. A floating pig doesn't trump Hey Jude.

And Paul can still sing his songs. How many people sang for Waters?

The poll options should be:

Paul McCartney (The Presets/The Crystal Method)
Roger Waters (Modeselektor/Simian Mobile Disco)

I would have to go with 2008 even though The Presets had the best overall show of the four.

They are the two best shows I've been to in my life, for entirely different reasons. McCartney was a celebration, Waters was a spectacle. It was amazing to experience the spectacle, and it was just as amazing to be part of the celebration.

For me, it was Waters, NO CONTEST.

show-wise it was waters, but that's only visuals.

performance-wise it was all mccartney - acoustic and electric guitar, ukulele, mandolin, piano, his voice. come on now, can't dispute that.

Waters executed his show to perfection. you would think a planned setlist would be easy to execute, but that wasn't the case the first time i saw him. the first time i saw McCartney, his set was tight and the songs flowed nicely, keeping the crowd into it throughout.. this time around, his set hit bumps in the road and there were many fans (Pot) not into his Wings and recent stuff. McCartney was still great, but I think at Coachella, he was bested by Waters' 08 performance.

It seemed like there was much more headliner fireworks this year.

Did they think, wow, look how excited people got during Roger Waters. Let's make everyone use fireworks.

PotVsKtl, the poll was about McCartney and Waters, not the campgrounds...LOL

And, for the record, I didn't miss a second of Waters and was brought to tears during afew songs VS expecting the same reaction to Sir Paul's set, and leaving before giving him a chance to do the same...Yeah, I said it. We walked away from Paul McCartney after say, the first 20-30 minutes to head back to the Sahara for the Presets and Crystal Method.

It was later, back at the campground that I shed a tear from listening to everybody talk about what we missed once Paul's show really kicked into gear...Enjoyed Presets and CM, but now I know how stupid Randy must have felt about missing Daft Punk in 2006...:laughyou Pardon me for the subtle jab there.

Waters sounded great singing the songs that were actually his vocals. The unfortunate bastard who had the task of imitating David Gilmour during the "Dark Side of the Moon" portion of the set didn't fare so well. I guess you can judge that as part of Waters' show, but let's at least be clear about it. "Mother", "Sheep", "Wish You Were Here", and "Another Brick in the Wall" sounded flawless.

The Beatles songs McCartney played vs. the Pink Floyd songs that Roger played are nearly a wash. Both were excellent selections, although obviously with McCartney sticking mostly to his own material it left out many of the best Beatles songs that were ever made.

Something no one is mentioning here in regards to McCartney's set is that he was acting like a drunk, hamfisted grandpa every moment that he wasn't playing. All the boogeying around and "OH YEAH!" and "Cornchella!" between songs was fucking distracting. On the list of things I did not want to watch a former Beatle do, McCartney did just about every one of them, short of singing a duet with Katy Perry. After watching Roger Waters command the stage like a god last year - and more recently, after watching Leonard Cohen carry himself like the coolest 74-year-old man who ever lived a couple hours prior - McCartney's stage presence came off desperate, and desperately uncool. The fact that he wasted about an hour playing shit that I didn't want to hear (and this is from a big fan of "Jet" and "Blackbird") only killed the momentum coming into his set further.

Of course, from "Eleanor Rigby" on, the show was wonderful. It wasn't enough to erase the sometimes-painful slow start, but it did redeem it considerably. In the end, though, that's not enough to top one of the 5 best shows I have ever seen. You may think that a concert should be first and foremost about the music, and that the "spectacle" of Roger Waters' performance was somewhat hollow. My feeling is that a sensory presentation of that caliber (video, stereophonic audio, lasers, pyro, prism, and of course - the fucking pig) elevates itself far above the level of mere "spectacle" and into the realm of EXPERIENCE. That's in addition to some of the greatest, most intellectually and emotionally stimulating music ever made. It was jaw-dropping and unforgettable.

And this is from someone who was stone sober for the entire thing.

I wanted to mention something similar, but couldn't quite put it into words like you did, schoolofruckus. When Paul came on stage he almost seemed timid looking out into the crowd.I knew it couldn't of been because he'd never played in front of that many people. And his stage banter between the first song or so did seem "corny" as you put it. Watching the screen, I kept noticing his eyes shifting towards the other tents, (which from where we were standing, were pretty loud.) and I assumed that maybe he expected more respect and was upset that he didn't play to a dark Coachella...Not sure. He just wasn't capturing our attention like I thought he would and we felt as if we were disrespecting him by slowly walking away. Seeing as this was probably the only conflict I had on the lineup, I thought we'd go find a good spot for the Presets/CM set instead. Our guilt complex for leaving did cause us to walk slower than normal to the Sahara, often turning and pausing to look back, hoping for a change of pace, but sadly it didn't happen.

It was during the Presets that suffacated nudged me to look towards the main stage, and although I couldn't really tell what was playing, I could certainly see we were indeed missing something special. I really wanted to experience "Live and Let Die" like I had seen on the You Tube vid, but my dancing feet were keeping pace in the Sahara. When CM ended, we immediately headed out, happy to be able to catch the end of Paul's set atleast, but I still have a small regret in not giving him a chance to "move me" like Waters did.:sorry

I'v seen Waters countless times and every time he sends that pig around, and before Paul that was the best performance i had ever seen. But Paul blew that experience out of the water and i live in LA were i get so many opportunities to see grate shows.

If you didn't like Paul Mccartneys set you really ARE a fucking huge FOOL.

I chose Waters for the overall experience. I don't get as close to the main stage, and thus there's more of a disconnect between me and the performer (except for the Prince show, where I was really close to the front). Waters did a better job of pulling me in. I loved McCartney's set and it was one of my favorites of the weekend, but Roger Waters had a better "show." Also, he didn't play anything off the Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking and only did a small smattering of his newer, undoubtedly worse material. But, the Pink Floyd material, while amazing, doesn't quite match up to those Beatles songs. Pretty comparable sets, but the lasers and flying prism put it ahead for me.

I don't know if anyone's said this yet but, Paul Mccartney doesn't need flying pigs and lazer prisms to put on an epic show. Paul Mccartney only needs Harrison's gift Ukelele. :)

Damn this one was hard to pick. Grew up listening to the Beatles and Pink Floyd. Loved both their sets. But I picked Paul because I was so impressed watching him play piano, guitar, bass, uke, mandolin, AND he still sounded great. Plus, Blackbird nearly brought me to tears.

i'm just saying Waters had some sweet old man swagger. Macca was corny (even for my taste!).

Macca's set is still settling in on me, though. I find his bootleg more enjoyable than Waters', but my vote still lies with Waters.

Stupid. This thread is just a Beatles vs. Floyd argument. Some of the arguments people are making are arguments why The Beatles are better than Floyd, not why the McCartney show was better.

They were both amazing, I was more amazed by Waters, but then I knew more songs that he played so I was able to get into it more. I didn't even see the pig btw, and I stayed the whole time.
