Help me out here. Would you take a trip to Alaska or go to either: Rothbury, APW or Lolla?

this is a no brainer for me. Alaska looks beautiful, but I could go somewhere I haven't been before and experience a new festival. Have you been to those fests before?

I have been to APW but not to Lolla or Rothbury (the line up for Roth does almost nothing for me, but that setting is amazing...and the folks I know that went won't shut up about it).

I would also assume that plane fares from Denver->Michigan or Denver->Chicago would be less than plane fares to Alaska. I think you should go to Lolla. Chicago is an incredible city.

Due to my Coast Guard Career, I've sailed to Alaska three times from SF, during the Fall, Winter and Summer. I've seen the sun set for less than an hour, sailed through 30 foot seas and active volcanoes and I have swam in the Arctic Ocean.
While Alaska is very beautiful there isn't much to do there besides enjoy the amazing scenery and outstanding wildlife.
I'd go to Lolla and see Chicago and then in the future really plan out an organized trip to the AK.

If the summerfest option included Fuji Rock, Summer Sonic, Glastonbury, or Reading/Leeds, I would have chosen that. But, not interested in Lolla (Chicago in the summer!), not quite excited enough by APW to actually go and never heard of Rothbury. (I see it's a jam band festival in Michigan, no thanks). I've always wanted to visit Alaska, maybe before the ice all melts due to global warming.

If you time it right you could see a show in the AK, here's the local music venue in Fairbanks:

If I had 6 months to live and had to pick one or the other I would probably pick Alaska, listen to Coldplay while hunting for wolves and maybe reach nirvana at some point.
Since you probably have more time than that go to Lollapalooza. Or if you care about the "scene" more than the music go to APW. Or Rothbury since you seem to want a new experience. But if it's just the music, Lollapalooza definitely.

If you come to Alaska I can show you around (if you come to Fairbanks, that is... much as I love all of you, I'm not about to drive 360 miles to Anchorage to see you).
If you do decide to come, let me know and I can give input as to activities you might enjoy/things you should see/etc. I've been working summers for tourism-related businesses since I was 14.

I would choose Alaska while it is still beautiful, before oil companies and Republicans get their way and it becomes a polluted wasteland

I'm also gonna have to go with Alaska on this one, TeamCoach.
I think APW looks nice, and Rothbury would be fun... but I think Alaska is in fact the more rare of oppurtunities, based on both of their lineups (and Lolla's as well). It's also pretty high on my list of places to go soon so maybe that's why.

Alaska: Nature + Nature
Rothbury: Nature + Music
APW: Music + City
Lolla: Music + City
I'd go with Rothbury, but I'm partial to partying in the forest:

Although, is Tool a factor for you this summer?

I would hands down pick alaska, although Rothbury is a close second. But not everyones taste are the same. For me, I'm a sucker for natural beauty and Alaska is pretty damn beautiful.
Daft put it best i think:
Alaska: Nature + Nature
Rothbury: Nature + Music
APW: Music + City
Lolla: Music + City
I guess I'm sort of a hypocrite though because I am going to Rothbury.
good luck!

Depends how strongly you feel about the lineups. But, the fact that you're even asking us all leads me to think you're not very excited about any of the festivals or else it wouldn't even be a question. So I say Alaska.

I am slightly excited about APW...but it is more to do with seeing those bands in that setting. Since, I have seen most of everything in that line up once or twice.

i am no different then anyone else so not bragging here .... yea tch, that is what happens if you really love music ... thru the years, you end up seeing everyone (of course not everyone but you know what i mean) and it is hard to get really really excited about who is playing because "been there done that" it turns into how much you want to go to the venue, who of your friends are going, or just to see the band for the nth time so you can pick up little things you missed the other times you saw them ... sorry for the early morning ramble ..... cr**** travel

no your right ron. Its like the NINJA show last night...I had no desire to go simply because of the venue. I have seen NIN a few times already and don't care for Jane's too much so I just saved my $$$...I think I might not do either Alaska or another music festival. Rothbury failed to add anything worthwhile (in my book) and Lolla is still rather meh in my book since I can see Tool, KOL, The Killers and pretty much everyone else here in Denver. APW is still the standout...but the time if just not right for me...maybe I'll fly to see Fever Ray somewhere in Oct?

I'd love to host you if you came to Anchorage! I manage a venue in Alaska and we see few great acts come through. NOTHING comparable to a festival lineup, but if you have your timing right, you can score a good show.
Anyway, if you need a place to stay/host, PM me (I live in downtown, in the heart of Anchorage)
