Einstein showed in 1905 that the time travel to the future is possible within his theory of special relativity. According to the theory, clocks tick slowly and this has actually been observed. We observe that if we take atomic clocks on an airplane trip around the world toward the East, where the velocity of the plane adds to the rotation velocity of the Earth, these clocks come back about 59 nanoseconds slow. In fact, we observe that particles that are moving with speeds nearly the speed of light decay more slowly. So, if you wanted to visit the Earth in the year 3000, all you have to do is to get on a rocket ship going at 99.995% of the speed of light, go to a star 500 light years away, turn around and come back at that speed. When you get back, the Earth would be 1000 years older, but you would only aged 10 years. The biggest time traveler so far is an astronaut named Sergey Evdeyev, who was on the Mir Space Station for a total of 748 days on three space flights. When he returned to earth he had aged about a 1/50 of a second less that if he stayed home. That is, when he returned to earth he found the Earth a 1/50 of a second to the future than what he expected it to be.

Possible or probable? Definitely possible in some capacity, but I'm not sure if it's probable in the sense that H.G. Wells was writing about.

Travelling forward is easy (and happens everywhere in small amounts, the faster you move through space, the more time goes by around you without your relative time going faster than normal), based on the principal of General Relativity. Travelling backward in time is the problem. The only theoretical way to do that at this point would be to travel faster than light. There is a theoretical particle called a tachyon that travels faster than light. But it's all theory at this point.

tachyons are a whimsical idea, not scientific theory. And since we are primarily composed of massive (mass-carrying) particles, even getting close to the speed of light would require unfathomably large amounts of energy.
The hypothesis goes, if you were to travel at close to the speed of light, and somehow brought a stable wormhole with you that has a twin on earth, events would appear to rewind when viewed through the wormhole. Then you could pass through it and be in the past. BUT (and its a big BUT), you still woundn't be able to travel back to a time earlier than the creation of the 2 wormholes. So that's why no one from the future is showing up around us.

...before time traveling from 10:30pm one night to 6am the following day. I began my journey in a Boston bar, and ended it nearly a mile away, stark naked and shivering in an inch of water on a bathroom floor. I had no idea where I was (at first) or how I'd arrived in my condition (still hazy).
