Because you guys are impatient, I am moving up the Solo Artists thread. Same rules as the bands lists, only with Solo Artists. Also, remember to choose carefully since you might be chosen to write an essay of one of your picks if they end up in the top 10. Same as the bands we will start from 1950 to today.

THE DEADLINE TO SUBMIT YOUR LIST IS AUGUST 19TH 12 NOON PST

so unleash hell and all that nonsense.

I thought about putting Beefheart on my list, but I respect him more than I genuinely enjoy listening to him. When the mood strikes me, it's fucking perfect, but it's rare that the mood strikes me. And Trout Mask Replica is too much of an inconsistent mess for me to personally like it as much as albums such as Safe As Milk or Lick My Decals Off Baby. Actually, I can listen to Safe As Milk just about any time. "Ella Guru" has got to be one of the 100 greatest songs of all time though.

Still,

A Tribute to Jack Johnson.

Winner.

Bitches is close, though.

Also I have realized that as good as his late 60s through first retirement were he was way behind on the avant-garde scene (because that isn't what he was trying to do, I realize) and that up until Bitches I'd much prefer Mingus and Coltrane and Ayler and Ornette Coleman.

Sun Ra was a huge thing for me when I was like 16 after discovering the world of Miles and Coltrane, just taking things to crazier extremes and incorporating the electric piano and the big freaky conceptual stuff. He still fascinates me. And if you're ever looking for some good reading material just open his wikipedia page, the dude has an insane life story.

With Mingus, I think his discography really shouldn't be too intimaditing. He has 5-6 perfect albums that I think anyone (from this board) could appreciate. But you have to start with Black Saint & the Sinner Lady. You'll be hooked from there, I promise.

I didn't bother with any blues because my interests tend towards the pre-war stuff, which is out of the jurisdiction of this contest. Sure Son House and others did some recordings in the 60s but they'ren't getting in on those merits alone.

Edit: What would you suggest I start with from Charles Mingus... I'm very intimidated by his discography.

The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady (1963) is my favorite jazz album ever and one of my favorite albums of any type. Mingus's greatest strength is as a composer. Here he leads a large ensemble in a unified avant garde set. It's unlike anything I've ever heard. Coltrane never had this vision, this direction. Miles never tried anything like this.

Pithecanthropus Erectus is from 1956. It is four hard bop numbers but they're ambitious enough that they keep me interested.

Oh, no knock was meant on Coltrane at all. You are completely right, Coltrane was doing different things.

Mingus was never as wild and free as Coltrane. Mingus never took it to that almost spiritual dimension that Coltrane hit in those late albums. These aren't meant as knocks on Mingus; he was going for different things.

There are other jazz albums that are one long piece (Free Jazz and Ascension come to mind) but they aren't unified compositions; they're, well, more free. They're wild and amazing and wonderful... but they'ren't The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady. They're different.

I know that one of the points in jazz, especially avant garde jazz, is freedom. I know that for composition you go to classical/orchestral music... and believe me, I do. But, for me, The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady is the best of both worlds; it has the short term freedom of avant garde jazz to give it a real hard edge but the long form control of classical music so that it really goes somewhere.

Disclaimer: I haven't heard every jazz album ever.

Mountmccabe introduced BL&SL very well. The genius of the album is all about Mingus as a composer, not as a player or a band leader. Where Miles Davis and Coltrane were interested in creating mood and playing with rhythm and, most of all, individual solos and group improvisations... Mingus was interested in composing a deliberate, thought-out, orchestrated piece that contained little improvisation and yet relied on dissonance and solos to the point that it sounds very free-form. It sounds free, but it's very calculated, so to speak. A precursor to contemporary noise music, in a way.

This is where I confess to my slight aversion to jazz. I've liked a few free jazz and/or jazz fusion records (Sun Ra, Spiritual Unity, Bitches Brew), and I think I just like the dissonance more than anything with those, but overall, I don't get it. I'm not sure what it is. It might be the instrumentation. Saxophone solos never did much for me, and I really like Bitches Brew, which has a completely different sound. But I feel like maybe I don't know what to listen for or how to recognize exceptional jazz. It seems like a whole rich sonic world that's cut off from me and I wish I knew what the key was to unlocking it.

08-10-2009, 09:27 PM
Patrick, have you ever listened to any Miles outside of Bitches Brew? Knowing you I think there's a couple more albums of his you'd like a lot more. On the Corner in particular.

Jazz is relatively easy to fall into, for me at least... just lay down and listen to one of them.

I agree, although I never just use the term "jazz" to describe something so particular, just the way I wouldn't use "rock" to simply describe the music of both Creedence Clearwater Revival and Can. But either way, this stuff is not impenetrable. I find it's usually very enjoyable on first listen.

Rage, I think you should download Bitches Brew and the Black Saint & the Sinner Lady, if only to satisfy some curiosity.

It might be the instrumentation. Saxophone solos never did much for me, and I really like Bitches Brew, which has a completely different sound.

Does that mean you like the hard trumpet solos more than the saxophone? Because if so I would direct you to Right Off, which is the first side of Miles Davis' A Tribute to Jack Johnson.

I liked jazz records before hearing that one but when I heard Miles come in at around 3 minutes... that shit just FLOORED me. THIS was what I had known jazz could be.

Confession: I have never listened to a full album from Miles Davis, John Coltrane or Charles Mingus. I have always been too intimidated. The fact you all know so much about them, while I know absolutely nothing is even more intimidating.

I used to have a friend in San Diego who was super into jazz who was always introducing me to new stuff, my first purchases were Kind of Blue, Bitches Brew, and A Love Supreme. Since then, I've just flat-out fell out of the loop with the genre in general.

Rage, I would listen to any of these 3 to start off. They might be the most popular and well-known, which isn't bad if you're trying to get into it and you recognize parts of the records, hence opening you up more to that kind of music.

And what the hell? I have no Billie Holiday so I'm trying to find a good overview compilation on allmusic and she has about 20 times as many comps than albums listed. And a lot of them are rated 5 stars.

The only album I've heard of hers is this one (http://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/billie_holiday/lady_in_satin/) and it's pretty damn good. I'm gonna have to look for a good comp(s) as well.

Good call. I think of the deterioration of her voice in a similar way to Bob Dylan's, though it happened to Holiday in a fraction of the time. The different eras are enjoyable for different reasons.

Holiday's voice in her earlier work is often exuberant, while later - as buddy suggested - it's heartbreaking. Even if one didn't know her tragic tale, it would be difficult to not hear elements of that experience in her voice.

I'm a huge Mingus fan, but calling him a "solo" artist is a bit much. His best work is as a composer and arranger for jazz ensembles and orchestras.

Perhaps this list should be better defined? Might have been a good idea to leave interpretive singers off the list? I'm finding myself compelled to fill the list up with the great interpretive singers of the 20th C.

Bjork
David Bowie
Nina Simone
Bob Dylan
Elliott Smith
Jeff Buckley
Grace Jones
Kate Bush
Mahalia Jackson
Madonna

Hon mention:

Rufus Wainwright.
But the last two albums have been so overblown and bombastic that I fear he's lost to pomposity and ego now. His debut, self-titled album remains his strongest. He needs a good producer like Jon Brion again who'll reign in his excesses. When he's at his simplest, his best, I've witnessed him silence a massive theatre of loud fans.

Nick Drake.
Should really be included, but I can't find a space.

Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams:
No explanation needed.

PJ Harvey, Tori Amos, Fiona Apple:
PJ - Would love to, but I have enough girl power on the list.
Amos - Hasn't made a decent record since mellowing with middle age and motherhood.
Fiona Apple - Not enough output (yet) to rank.

Sarah Vaughan:
One of my absolute favorite jazz vocalists, but I had to stick with Nina.

I couldn't agree more on Tori. She made my list based on the strength of everything Choirgirl-backwards. There were a few choice tracks on To Venus & Back as well.

And I actually don't mind most of Rufus' bombast. While I prefer the s/t and Poses, I wouldn't have "The Art Teacher" without Want Two. God, I love that song. And the Release the Stars stuff sounded excellent live...though I preferred just a piano and him.

Because you're likeable, Josh. :winkiss And you've previously explained your love and respect for Andrew W.K. before; so while some may not agree with your choice, you have your reasons.

Oh, and because you didn't include Disturbed in your band list.

Get Safe As Milk, which is a lot easier of an entry point, and then get Trout Mask Replica, because everyone should at least be familiar with it. Lick Your Decals Off Baby is pretty fun. There's some other good ones, but those are good starting points.
