For a reasonable price to me?* (working ipod of course)
My pod broke last weekend and its like losing a best friend. I take bus every single day and with no music these days have been unbearable.
For all you non-public transportation takers, imagine if your car stereo, cd player, speakers, EVERYTHING just broke.!!!
So maybe we can work something out? I turn to you CMB for help in my hour of need. Someone please take pity on me

You should search ebay!

There are always old school ipods on there for very cheap. And despite their being old, they work just as well as far as I know. Don't hold as much music though, that's the bummer.

I'd stay the hell away from the old-scoolers to be honest. They had a lot of battery problems, if I remember right.
That said, might be worth asking in an iPod repair place if they sell refurbished ones.

Agreed with MP! Stay away from the older models. Battery issues, circuit issues, unusual heat sensitivity issues.

How hard is it to grab a 2gb shuffle for $50 at walmart and be done with it? the cd player in my cars works maybe once a day if I am lucky. I deal with the silence.

I purchased mine from this website. It's a 30GB video. Average price is 85.00 but paid 105.00 because it's red, which caused a bit of a bidding war.

I kid, I kid. I know Apple.com sells refurbished iPods that have been given new serial numbers and warranties. Not too expensive.

We had an extremely high return rate on them where I used to work. I sold hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of iPods, and I own a Creative Zen.
I wouldn't risk an older one myself, personally, is all I'm saying. Not only did they have a fairly high incidence of problems, it's trickier to find accessories for them now and they're a fair bit more unweildy than their little brothers and sisters. If it were me, I think I'd prefer to spend the money on a newer refurb. Moore's Law is on your side, so it's not like you're going to be paying more for less neither.

Any luck Salah? I had a 20gb iPod photo for about 5 years till my drunk ass dunked it in a cup of water. It still worked but when I tried to put new music on it that's when I realized I could not access it on iTunes so I gave in and bought a 120gb classic. Had that unfortunate incident not happened I would still be rockin that old schooler - and it worked just fine, no battery problems, no glitches, used it every day 6+ hours a day. What about craigslist?

Yeah my 30gb video has been full for months now and it is starting to freeze a handful of times a month which is becoming a bit of a nuisance. Word on the street was they were phasing out the Classic's by years end and replacing it with a bigger (and ridiculously expensive) ipod Touch.

Interesting. I have seen some 120gb ipod classics on craigslist for about 150 bucks same goes for the Zune.
I'm trying to decide which to go with. I enjoy my Ipod Video and have for about 3 years but 30GB is small just like others are saying. I would love it if one of the Cowans or other companies would make a player that I can slide in my shirt picket like I can with my ipod since that's where I often keep mine but until then I think I have to stick with the ipod. Is the Zune a lot more bulky?

I had an Archos, it was terrible -- froze a lot, was way too big and heavy to fit in a pocket, and ended up permanently dying a few weeks after the (1 year) warranty. The only real selling points to it, at the time were to be able to use it as a USB drive (people had convinced me you can't see iPods as removable drives which is not true, and now USB drives are so cheap that this doesn't matter) and because I was really anti-Apple because of the fanatic fandom that surrounds them.
I've had a 60gb video (5g) since they came out and haven't had problems. I've managed to crash it a few times in 4 years. I would definitely buy another. Actually right now I'm waiting to see what Apple's september announcements are regarding ipods before I buy another. I've had my eye on the "new" classics that are 120gb but want to see what's coming up.
Mark, the only people I know who really love Zunes are friends who work at M$ :)

Thanks for the insight Heidi. Frozen Pilgrim really had me sold on getting something other than an ipod because of sound quality but not one other device can do what the ipod does for me. Large capacity (120GB) and slim enough to fit in my shirt pocket. Looks like i'm leaning towards the 120 gb ipod then. I'll see if anyone else chimes in with other suggestions but it seems doubtful.

If there is an inherent problem with the player, then his hearing must be a lot better than mine. :) All of the mp3 players I've listened to are comparable. What really matters is headphones and how you've encoded the music. Sure, 128kbs mp3s with Apple's free earphones sound terrible. I haven't moved to using lossless files for portable listening, but ripping at a high quality with a good encoder is definitely "good enough" for me.

You can still get them on Amazon. I just replaced mine through them, though I opted for the newer model (which caps at 120 gb) because I had some problems with the old one and was hoping maybe they had been ironed out with the new generation. But they're there. I checked again before I wrote this.

just promise me you'll be super duper careful when installing itunes and ripping music that you use a decent .mp3 codec, not apple's god-awful m4a. I love my zen (30 gigs and the size of a stack of credit cards) but if you want something 60 gigs+, and ipod's pretty much the only option other than one of what I like to call the "man-players" like the archos
edit: and chia, I am pretty ridiculous about my sound quality, but it's not JUST me. ipods are notorious for not exactly being the best sounding player out there.

It somehow became corrupted and at this point refuses to sync all the way through, and then (when it has songs) it will stop playing them and start advancing through all of them on its own as though all of the files were corrupted (I'm usually able to fix this with a temporary reset, but it's pretty obnoxious. And sometimes songs that have been passed over in this manner actually DO become corrupted and refuse to play later). So, by problems, I mean that it refuses to let me put any music on it, and if I did get it to work I'd have to spend a good amount of time convincing it to play some for me.

Pilgrim, I've heard from quite a few people that the Zen is no better than the iPod in terms of hardware quality. Could you expand on what makes it better? Admittedly I probably won't consider a Zen at this point since I am wanting more than 60gb now, not less.
frozen pilgrim
08-18-2009, 09:10 AM
just the actual DAC chip that converts the digital signal to the analog signal that goes into the headphones. around the 3rd or 4th generation apple started buying from a third party. also, there's the codec issue- most ipod users don't know about the quality issues with apple's codecs, and so they don't switch their settings in itunes, resulting in an ipod full of 192kb fixed bitrate m4a files that're missing 10-20% of the frequency spectrum and most of the dynamics and stereo imaging of the original file. creative is still in the business of making their own sound cards and DACs, and in my personal opinion, their players just sound a bit better. and you can use whatever MP3 codecs you want. also, I like having 32 gigs the size of a stack of credit cards, SDHC expansion, ease of sharing with friends, drag-and-drop functionality, good integration with the xbox360... it just fits the bill for what I wanted. I'd never even attempt to carry my whole collection, so choosing music is already an issue. I don't think anyone makes a several-hundred-gigabyte player that can fit comfortably in my pocket while biking or skating.

08-18-2009, 01:18 PM
The codec "problem" is independent of the iPod though, perhaps iTunes can be blamed if you want to blame someone other than the user. They have to pick a default, and it's one that a lot of casual users will be happy with, as it allows them to approach the maximum number of songs stored for the capacity they bought. If they were to use a default with the highest quality, but also largest file size, possible, casual listeners would use that without realizing or caring and would complain that they didn't get anything close to the song capacity Apple has claimed.
You can't please everyone and you have to cater to your most ignorant users while making options available for those who want more. They do that. The codec settings are the simpliest thing to change, and I think you under-estimate people. A person who is not going to bother looking at the very obvious burning settings is also probably not going to care that their file quality sucks. Of course, it doesn't let you use any codec imaginable but do have like 4 or 5 choices including 2 lossless.
These are consumer electronics products though.... whatever is marketable to over 100 million people is likely not going to please someone looking for audiophile equipment.

it's not silly at all. I can hear the difference immediately. the ipod's DAC has active dynamic range compression to squeeze the highest SPL possible out of the least battery. i.e. it's louder and thinner sounding. but like I said, change the codecs, use good headphones, and it's not a big enough deal for most people to worry about. but there really is a difference, and for someone like me, it really rules the ipod out.
also, there's the whole horror show that is the itunes software itself. registry fuckerage, quicktime rapeage, and all that.

So the rumor going around (e.g., here (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/apple/6161016/Apple-to-kill-off-iPod-Classic-as-focus-moves-to-touch-screen-devices.html)) is that Apple is going to discontinue the iPod classic line. Announcement today. If this is true I think it means several things:
- It will put a serious crimp in my music listening style.
- I don't think I am alone in this
- which means a large aftermarket for 2nd hand Classics will likely develop. (there already is one for 160gb)
- which means there may be an investment opportunity: buy up as many Classics as you can now and resell them on eBay in a few months at a nice profit.
- which also means Apple would have a gaping hole in its lineup and potentially open the door to serious competition.

Rumor also has it that the 160GB Classic is coming back:

The 160 is so great, I don't foresee ever switching.

I have a 160 classic that's corrupted. Anybody know of a good third-party repair place that doesn't want to charge me more than I paid for the new one (IE: not Apple)? I miss it. It was a gift and it has Spoon lyrics engraved on the back. Far be it from me to agree with Sbessiso, but it really is like losing a friend.

I thought today's announcement was to introduce camera capabilities.

Somehow I managed crack up the screen for my 30gb black video ipod, so I can't see a thing on the screen but brightness and cracks. So I blindly shuffled through music for a while but now it seems to be adversely effecting the battery life as well.
Time for a new ipod.

god damn mother fucking mother fucker god damn.
I lost my 160 a few weeks ago and had to replace with a 120. Which is essentially full and I have been deleting stuff (movies, photos, TV shows, podcasts - not actual music, yet) and now you tell me I just had to wait a little bit for the 160 to return? mother fucker god damn.

well those new Nano's are beautiful. I'll be getting that eventually. I'm a bit peeved about the 160 gig classic coming back, considering my 120gig is literally being shipped from Shanghai as we speak. I only spent 20 bucks on it since I got a computer and used the student deal. I didn't want a touch so that was certainly the best deal...still though....motherfuckers, i want a 160

Oh man. I'm so glad they brought back the 160. It will be mine.

That new nano looks very running friendly. I like.
But, a 160 classic for general use and a mini for exercise or running seems like the way to go. Pricey, but flexible.

I want a Classic that has at least 80gb but not really looking to spend $250. Any of you kids ready to cut ties with your iPod?
