"NEW DELHI, INDIA — Rights activists lashed out Friday at local officials who allowed hundreds of infants to be dropped from the roof of a mosque in western India in the belief that the fall — which ends when the babies are caught in a bedsheet — would ensure good health and prosperity for their families.

The ritual at the Baba Umer Durga, a Muslim shrine, is believed to have been followed for nearly 700 years, and each year hundreds of people, both Hindus and Muslims, take part in the ritual.

Local officials told television news stations there had been no reports of injuries.

The infants, mostly under two years old, were dangled Thursday from the roof of the shrine near Sholapur, about 280 miles south of Mumbai, before being dropped about 50 feet onto a bedsheet held aloft by parents and other believers.

Television channels showed the babies screaming as they were shaken in the air before being dropped.

With high child mortality rates, especially in India's rural areas, many people resort to rituals which they believe can ensure their children's health.

Child rights activists expressed outrage after the Headlines Today television channel showed the babies being dropped.

"This shows the complete failure of the local administration to prevent this practice and to create awareness about children's health," said Ranjana Kumari, a civil rights activist in New Delhi.

"It is also a reflection of the lack of access to health services, that forces people to behave in this irrational manner," Kumari told the AP.

India's National Commission for Protection of Child's Rights issued a notice Thursday to the local administration in Sholapur and has begun investigations into the practice."

If you want to convince people to continue your religion, sometimes those people need to be shaken and dropped off the roof as a baby.

The 32-page warrant said Dr. Conrad Murray, Jackson's personal physician, told a detective that he had been treating Jackson for insomnia for six weeks. Murray said each night he gave Jackson 50 mg of propofol, also known as Diprivan, diluted with the anesthetic lidocaine via an intravenous drip.

Worried that Jackson may have been becoming addicted to the drug, the Houston cardiologist said he attempted to wean him from it, putting together combinations of other drugs that succeeded in helping Jackson sleep during the two nights prior to his death.

But on June 25, other drugs failed to do the job, he told the detective, who described the following: At about 1:30 a.m., Murray gave Jackson 10 mg of Valium. At about 2 a.m., he injected Jackson with 2 mg of the anti-anxiety drug Ativan. At about 3 a.m., Murray then administered 2 mg of the sedative Versed. At about 5 a.m., Murray administered another 2 mg of Ativan. At about 7:30 a.m., Murray gave Jackson yet another 2 mg of Versed.

"Murray stated that he was continuously at Jackson's bedside and was monitoring him with a pulse oximeter," a device that measures the oxygen saturation of a person's blood, according to the affidavit.

At about 10:40 a.m., Murray finally administered 25 mg of propofol "after repeated demands/requests from Jackson," the affidavit said.

"Jackson finally went to sleep and Murray stated that he remained monitoring him. After approximately 10 minutes, Murray stated he left Jackson's side to go to the restroom and relieve himself. Murray stated he was out of the room for about 2 minutes maximum. Upon his return, Murray noticed that Jackson was no longer breathing."

I like that the doctor was worried about MJ becoming dependent upon Diprivan, but had no problem experimenting with injections of various other drugs hour after hour

Well, fuck! Who the hell can sleep when you've got some jackass poking you with shit every fucking hour? And how the hell does a pulse ovimeter work and where does that thing get stuck?
