Yeah, really there isn't going to be a better show than Coachella 2006 because that is the show. Nobody knew what the hell we were about to see and they came out and blew minds. Its a legendary show and no matter how great the rest of their shows are because they do improve upon their live show it just doesn't compare to that night.

I think 2006 will never be beaten because it was unanticipated.

but the LA show was a better show, and it was after a period when I thought I would never get to see them again. that is also notable.

and I believe the stories that lolapalloza was the best show. I wish I had gone.

that may be, but i remember people in the crowd were saying stuff like "oh i hope they wear their robot helmets" which is hilarious now knowing what their live show is like. Plus every second it was just crazy from track to track because you had no idea what the pyramid was capable of. at first you were like holy fucking shit that thing is awesome a giant black pyramid and they are wearing the robot costumes, then you go oh my fucking god it lights up?, and it gets more complex as it goes. It was just nuts.

nothing will beat the Coachella show. NOTHING. I didnt even go and I know it.

I was one of the long awaiting people to see Daft Punk, and when I heard they were playing Coachella I nearly shat my pants. Of course I never could get the founds in time and failed to make it. And then I heard AT&T was broadcasting Coachella live (but they never released who they were gonna show till later) so I was somewhat relieved. I remember sitting at my computer crossing my fingers that Saturday night that AT&T would show some footage of the Daft Punk Coachella show. Never happened. They just showed She Wants Revenge.....I stayed up awaiting peoples reviews. Then about 5AM (central time) videos of the show started popping up on the internet. Most of them were little clips maybe 1 min at the longest. And I was in complete AWWWWW. I nearly cried, it was so glorious. I continued to stay up throughout the whole day just watching Daft Punk videos. That was a very exciting morning.

not to mention the mix... the whole time I was stunned by the entirely original, unheard mashups of daft punk songs. I couldn't believe it, and never knew what they were going to throw in next. there was nothing about that show that was in the least bit predictable, except possibly that they began with robot rock. that's it. everything else... man. if I could go back.

here's the LV weekly one... there's nothing totally new, but there are more details about things we were already aware of.

Have the two of you ever been to Las Vegas?

We've been many times, we just haven't performed there. It's fun that our last [North American] performance will be in Vegas. It's a fascinating place, and it's really about entertainment and showtime and lights and magic and a dream state, which obviously have connections with our show. So conceptually and symbolically we feel it's fun to perform there on Halloween weekend. It's definitely something that we didn't expect a year ago, but as long as we end up doing surprising things for ourselves and other people it's worthwhile.

Will Vegoose really mark the final appearance of the Daft Punk pyramid on U.S. soil?

It's true that this will be the last performance in America of this tour and with this setlist and a lot of this universe that we brought in. We might or might not come back with a few songs or some ideas that we've had from this show, but there's no plans for touring in 2008, and it's very unlikely that we would come back with something similar.

Should we read into that, then, that this could be Daft Punk's final U.S. show ever?

We hadn't toured for 10 years, so we definitely took this North American tour as strong encouragement from the audience to try to put us back on the road more often, but at the same time there are other projects we're interested in. But hopefully there will be more possibilities to perform in the future.

What was last year's Coachella Music & Arts Festival pyramid debut like for you?

It was a very important moment, very emotional, very exciting and encouraging enough that it was really worth trying to travel and tour and perform as much as we could to share our experience with different audiences all over the globe.

So going into that show, you didn't necessarily have plans to tour further?

We were supposed to do one or two other shows, but the show is extremely complicated and expensive and intricate and sophisticated, with a lot of different challenges, so I think that a not-so-successful response from the audience might have made it less possible to travel and present it to other audiences. So it's really an excitement around this show that made the tour possible.

There were rumors before Coachella that Daft Punk was considering calling it quits. Was that ever close to being the case?

No, even in those 10 years [between tours] we did two studio albums and worked on an animation film in Japan for two years... but at the same time we were quite secretive and were not expressing ourselves extensively, so there's all kinds of rumors that can see the light of day. But it's never been the case that we were thinking of retiring. In general, we feel we have a lot of things to express, and we're always trying to find the most innovative or experimental way to do it. this tour, in a way, has been a very avant-garde, large-scale experiment. We felt that we were trying to do something new that's not really been done before.

In layman's terms, explain what you guys do during a performance.

Basically, what we're doing in this setup -- which is different than what we were doing 10 years ago with dozens of machines onstage -- is that we've pretty much re-created, in a software environment, our entire studio, with a lot of different samples and drum sounds and pad sounds which we access through remote controls and some synthesizers that are in the pyramid. All of these elements are combined together... the easiest way to explain would be that it's similar to what a DJ does sometimes, but instead of having two or three sources, there are sometimes up to 15, 16, 17 different sources, all combined and shuffled and looped and all operated more or less in concert with the lights as well as the video. And all trying to stick to the story that the show tells, which is really a combination of sound frequencies and light frequencies, a very global experience, and trying to be as intense as possible.

What function do your helmets serve?

We transformed ourselves very early to these robots, and now we perform as these two robots in these environments. We are able to communicate between us on intercom and really perform and do everything that we need to do in them. And at the same time they have become our alter egos.

Did the positives associated with the high-quality bootleg DVD that emerges after Coachella -- namely what it did to spread the legend of Daft Punk's live show -- outweigh any financial downside?

That was very exciting, because we started out trying to really do something experimental, this show, and a very new, almost experimental thing happened, with people appropriating these images and posting thousands of clips, not just of Coachella but of all the subsequent shows. The audience was really doing something new with technology that they could not have done five or 10 years ago, a new [version] of what had been done with the Grateful Dead's shows, for example, but really in a very new, experimental way. So we've really encouraged that. At the same time, from a video point of view, that's one of the reasons we decided not to release a DVD, because we felt that the amount of data and video that was online was much more compelling from these different points of view than anything that we could have captured ourselves. But audio-wise we saw a possibility to release an official version of the Paris show at the highest fidelity possible [Alive 2007] with a booklet of photos from the tour.

What did you think of Kanye West's "Stronger"?

We're very please with his interpretation of some elements of our song and how he's made it his own. We've always been influenced by African-American music in the past, as well as American music in general, and it's really satisfying for things to come full circle and to reinject some of our music that has those influences back into hip-hop. And Kanye West is an important American artist, so it was pleasing.

How about LCD Soundsystem's "Daft Punk Is Playing at My House"?

Like any musician, when you start a project, you don't think that anything that you're going to do will somehow have cultural impact, but we've been fortunate enough to have been doing this Daft Punk project this long -- it's going to be 15 years next year since we recorded our first single -- and it's been rewarding in a way to have this validation from other artists. But also very weird because we've never expected that kind of reaction.

Have you ever been tempted to actually play a house show?

I don't know -- anything is possible. We've always tried to do different things -- so, yeah, why not? If it's worthwhile, of course.

Do you watch HBO's Flight of the Conchords?

No, but I've heard of the skit where they are dressed like robots. I remember also a reference in 25th Hour, the Spike Lee film... there was a scene where a girl was like, "Oh, I've been to this dressing room. I was with Daft Punk there." That's obviously very unexpected and really weird for us, as detached as we are, to experience that.

So now that you've built and toured atop a giant, glowing pyramid, what can Daft Punk possibly do next?

Yeah [laughs], that's the tough part, but at the same time this show is like a dream machine, and the good thing is that if you're careful enough, dreams don't stop. Sometimes you have more and more ambitious ones, sometimes smaller-scale dreams, but as long as we feel that we have things to say or to do, we'll try to do it. Our evolution has never been measured in terms of goals of scale, doing bigger and bigger things, but rather doing challenging things that can be exciting and trigger the imagination, a little bit between fiction and reality. That's what these robots are, and that's what we are and will continue to be as long as we can.

we've been craving something new, and it looks like we're going to get something entirely new. who knows how long we'll have to wait for it though.

weep.

This whole 'Coachella was the greatest because "no one" knew what to expect' garbage is silly. It's quite a stretch to believe that every human being on the face of the earth has a) already seen them live; and b) researched what their show will be like before going to their fucking show. There are other people who attended Daft Punk @ Lolla, or Daft Punk @ that shitty LA venue who had no idea what to expect. There were people who attended Daft Punk @ Vegoose and had no idea what to expect. You judge a performance on the fucking performance, not on how far along the tour it was, shit-for-brains, or by the fact you've already seen them [or shitty YT videos of them] so everyone knows what to expect.

[B]Daft Punk @ Vegoose > Daft Punk @ any other time; deal with it.

Daft Punk After Party Featuring Steve Aoki and DJ AM
October 27, 2007
The hottest club to land in Sin City, LAX Nightclub, continues to rock The Strip with unrivaled parties as Daft Punk hosted their after-concert party last night. The French house musicians Guy Manuel de Homen-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, better known as Daft Punk, partied under the light of the Luxor at their premier VIP table on stage. The duo took in the sight of excited fans and flashing cameras as they sipped on Grey Goose and RedBull. Also sharing a table with them was mash-up phenom DJ AM and DJ Steve Aoki who drank Voss water and RedBull before tearing up the turntables until the early morning hours for the packed house. Also making LAX his party spot of choice was actor Andrew Brynairski who mingled with some lucky ladies and took in the electrifying scene before calling it a night. Later in the evening, actress Ashley Leggat, who celebrated her birthday at LAX the previous night, made it her final destination of the evening as she grabbed a table across the stage from the famed DJs. Leggat and friends toasted to the evening with shots of Patron while soaking up the scene of the hottest nightclub in town.

Vegoose was their best live show yet (I saw Coachella, Los Angeles, and Toronto). They are throwing in little squiggly improvs all over the place - seriously; curlicues galore. There was an awesome gent in from Chicago with a nice taper setup and he was kind enough to give my buddy the cd for our drive back home today. Wait until you hear it. The live recording they're releasing next month is of the Bercy show from June, but the Vegoose performance is as fresh as a daisy four months later and it's better.

I don't know how to upload and am unsure of the morality. This taper may just want it to be his own and I don't know how to reach him to ax.

Why do people keep bringing up Rollin & Scratchin like they didn't play it? It was mixed into their set pretty much exactly the same way it was at Bercy for sure (based on the thousands of times I've listened to the bootleg), and LA was not more than 1% different from my recollection.

CyddV
10-29-2007, 10:02 PM
I am 99.9% sure Rollin' & Scratchin' was not played in LA. I know they played it at Bercy, but I did not listen to the boot so all the changes/modifications would be a surprise at the LA gig. I went into that show not even knowing about the new costumes, praying they would do the encore in the tuxedo suits.

superfiction
10-29-2007, 10:12 PM
you are 99.9% wrong. the set list is still the same and has been the same since the start of the 07 tour. however. with that said, they extended the whole section at vegoose massively. and they changed some of the interludes a bit. but the tweaks and amount of synthesis they now do live is far superior to anything ive heard previously in the 6 other shows i saw

He wouldnt have it, he was rollin' so of course nobody while they are on E would listen to anything that contradicts their opinion right?

You really aren't qualified to make this argument seeing as you weren't there in 2006. I saw them on this tour and I saw them in 2006 and nothing can compare to that night you just had to be there to understand.

That's quite a stupid thing to say, let me tell you that right now. On one hand, you tell me that I cannot say one show was better than another because I wasn't at every show they have ever done, and then in the same paragraph, you proclaim that one night was natural ecstasy running through your penis veins [and therefore superior in every imaginable way because, well, it was a special night *rolleyesviolently*]. Irony 101?

I would argue that by seeing them on this tour I'm qualified to say that Vegoose wasn't as great as 2006 because I can understand that the light show might have been a little bit better, that they may have added a little more things to each song which is really cool, but in the case of Coachella its just one of those you had to be there moments.

Bottom line: Coachella is the legendary show and Vegoose is just another stop on the 2007 Alive tour.

Coachella performance was more fun, and more of a rush, but that is also due to the element of surprise. Their actual mix at Vegoose reigns supreme though, and their is no denying that. Not only did i get Burnin, and the lolla tweak of Aerodynamic, but they stretched segments and tacked on about 5 minutes of extra music compared to their gig. not to mention the encore. c'mon now, be reasonable here

EDIT: I'm pretty sure Burnin' was added in the 2007 tour, am i wrong?

So question... a lot of people seem to be assuming that when Daft Punk return touring (presumably not until atleast 09) they will no longer be using the pyramid and have a new stage set up.
What is leading everyone to think this? It would be cool to see a new set up from them... but is there anything behind this talk? Or is it all just wishfull thinking?

your question was already answered, but I thought I'd point you to the part of the original post... click the link to the post and you'll find the whole interview from the LV Weekly.

We checked it out. It was super crowded. I thought we could get there before the crowd because we had the most epic escape from the parking lot and beat all the traffic but nope. It was probably a 45 min - hour wait when we showed up. Her feet hurt and I was thirsty so we hung out at the flight club instead.

i wouldnt be surprised if they just did an alive 97 type thing for their next tour, because there is no way to upstage the pyramid, but they dont like doing the same thing twice soo, give them 3 more years to make a new album, and then 2 more after that to think of some tour ideas....i cant wait to see Daft Punk again in another 5-7 years.

Even though they are out in the lime light at the moment, those guys are gonna burrow themselves into the ground soon and go undetected until the year 2012, when they will emerge to end the world with a show in Mayan ruins. sorry if i gave the ending to Life away. my bad.

Well folks, as promised, your gift can be found below.

I don't think this is new by any means. I got it from someone on the old board (Credit below). This is the high-res version he sent me of the photo. I don't know if he's still on our boards, hell he could be one of the regular contributors for all I know.

Interest in a New DVD?

I spearheaded the DP Coachella DVD in '06. I can't believe that I'm asking this after the insane amount of work that was, but are people interested in me trying to put together an '07 version using the Alive 2007 sound recording? If so, I'll need as much original (non-compressed, non-youtube, direct from your DV recorder) video footage from this tour as I can get, to maximize picture quality and angles for editing. Originally I thought I'd stick to the LA show due to the extra lighting that it had, but I think we'll have better coverage if we use footage from all tour stops.

Drop a post if you're interested. And let me know if you have original video footage that you could send to me (via torrent, snail mail, whatever). I'm not going to do this if we don't have enough footage to make it at least as good as the Coachella DVD.

But I'd wait at least until the tour is over so we can get some (possible) Mexico,Japan, and Aussie footage.

man, I can't believe you are volunteering to do this either, but I have some footage I will upload when I get home... I have a couple of decent vids I think, each a couple of mins long, shot 640x480.

it would be great if we did this -- we have so much more footage from the whole tour than we did for the one show last year that we can probably create a much better quality dvd. and DP have said themselves that the vast amount of footage out there is the reason they didn't release an official dvd. let's embrace that and put the best of it together, and make it available in a version that is NOT shitty youtube quality video.

I'm excited already.

I'm not going to do this if we don't have enough footage to make it at least as good as the Coachella DVD.

mbrunet (aka Freakboy)
man, i can't begin to tell you how crazy and utterly insane that is. so i won't. heh. i burned off so many copies of that DVD as an additional christmas gift to friends last year, and enjoyed it many times myself ever since.

i'd like to contribute if i can. i've got about 23 minutes from Red Rocks, and another 16 from Lollapalooza.

I'd like to see it. I'd actually also like somebody (Supre?) to upload whatever the original Coachella DVD footage was for me--I have an edited version that frankly has some shitty angles in it and comes in around Technologic.

Here's links to Supre's Berkeley footage if they still work--it's the best of the boots from 2007 that I've seen.

You'll probably want to edit in from another version when Supre hits that goddamn zoom button. It's really good work otherwise though. Might I recommend the Vegoose bootlegs for the audio? Grazie, and good work on spreading the gospel of Daft.

1. Why would you ask for a daft punk recording on a strokes forum?

2. You should contact Supreman directly.

i asked on the strokes forum because they have a request thread and i have been on there for a long long time so people already know me and are more willing to help.

and i did contact supreman directly and i got the response of "you snooze you loose" which i tried to explain in my post that i wasn't technically "snoozing" because i have been searching since the night of the show.

and to RotationSlimWang thanks for posting those links but unfortunately they have expired which is why i am here before you today

i know it's like super late but i had to talk about Vegoose. It was my birthday on the 27th. So to see Daft Punk do One More Time was the greatest thing ever. it was the best birthday EVER! They sounded soooooo good. They really improved from the coachella and la sports arena show. And hey IT WAS VEGAS! other acts were good MIA, Blonde redhead, Atmosphere, Iggy Pop doing Fun House was a speacil treat. not a trick. But the night belonged to Daft Punk what a day what a year, I keep reading about what show was better??? Berkley, LA, Coachella ect... and i have to be honest "The Coachella show was the best" let me tell ya why. Because before that Nobody had seen or heard anything like that. So when they came out with the pyramid and their Robots suits it was a shocker for everyone in attendance that day. It was history but the Vegoose show was them at the perfect showmanship. That's all just another great DP review and I hope to see them At Coachella 2010 "A space odessey

I don't care if they personally come into the audience and crowdsurf at a future show, the Coachella show will always be the best.

These dudes come back for their first show in 7 years, nobody has any idea what it's going to be like, and wham they completely rock the brains out of anybody within 10 miles of the Sahara tent. Whenever I meet someone who was there that night I go "So you saw them at Coachella?" and they go "YEAH" and we kind of just yell "OHMYFUCKINGGODHOWWASTHATSHIT" "BESTNIGHTOFMYLIFEROBOTPYRAMIDONEMORETIME" for a while.

i just put up Daft Punk pictures from Vegoose. (http://www.coachella.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12477&page=2&highlight=ivankay)

i saw Coachella, the LA Sport Arena, and Vegoose. Personally i'm going to go with the Coachella show for being the most spectacular for me. That anticipation factor was HUGE. i think the Sports Arena show had more going for it show wise, but this is a personal thing. Vegoose was longer, but i was in picture taking mode and that prevents me from just letting go and just being. So i have a mark against my judgement on that one.

I think it was posted somewhere, since that's the version I think I have.

I agree it's a great recording, but that's expected at Vegoose.

So on another note, I noticed a new melody/synth in the transition from Television Rules the Nation to Steam Machine. It's an awesome melody so I'm hoping someone can ID whether or not it's another Daft song. I don't remember it at Coachella/LA/Berkeley, so it might not be new.

I'll try and upload an mp3 somewhere.

It starts at the 10:50 mark of track 3 from the FLAC Bokonon posted above.

Well, I'm confused because the section you put up with the synth you think might have been added in doesn't sound new to me at all. It's always gone from those sixteenth notes for about four measures then into eight notes of the same synth. Unless you're talking about a completely different sound in that section than the dominant one. It's always been one of my favorite parts of the show.

I donno if anyone posted this already (checked last couple pages and didnt see it.) but here is a great quality vegoose recording. IMO better than the coachella recording. Its encoded in flac so its a big download. Torrent btw.http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=510632

I NEED TO DOWNLOAD THAT, HOW DO YOU DOWNLOAD FROM TORRENT. DID IT GET THE VIVA LAS VEGAS OPENING SONG??

Well, I'm confused because the section you put up with the synth you think might have been added in doesn't sound new to me at all. It's always gone from those sixteenth notes for about four measures then into eight notes of the same synth. Unless you're talking about a completely different sound in that section than the dominant one. It's always been one of my favorite parts of the show.

Well, what I posted up there is different than the transition at Coachella.

I checked the recording. I also don't remember it at the Sports Arena or in Berkeley.

I don't mean to say the synth is different, rather that the melody is different.

Ok here is what that section sounds like:

wow I remember that. man it's been a long time since I listened to the coachella bootleg.

I should listen to it again. and watch the dvd. to compare to my recent vegoose experience.

I just realized, it's really nice to have bootlegs of both my first and my last daft punk shows.

UH UH. This is the Vegoose show. The dick yelling "Let's Go Let's Go" three or four times at 31:47 is on the cd the taper next to my buddy gave us for the drive back to LA.

yeah i was skeptical about it, i just didnt have time to compare because i was downloading it, so i just posted to the link just in case.

if you notice, they just tack on the close encounters part and then on the first ROBOT the crowd kicks in. this would probably because the taper had the close encounters on the first track with viva las vegas.

ill try to dig up the mexico one if it does exist though.

sorry for the confusion.

ps. its funny that you figured it out from the "LETS GO" guy and not that fucking AMAZING tweak during robot rock where they fade out robot rock and tweak human after all underneath it! I totally came when I heard that part @ vegoose.

its on the vegoose btree one (the good one): track two and it starts(kinda) @ 4:06 and they drop out robot rock @ 4:14 and tweak HHA and then bring back robot rock @ 4:23.
