If you like absinthe as liquor, fine. If you think you're getting any kind of a trip out of it, you're not. The thujone (active ingredient in wormwood, which made absinthe a hallucinogen) levels in any absinthe produced today are not nearly high enough to produce even a threshold level psychoactive experience short of consuming enough to qualify for alcohol poisoning.
Never tried it as a liquour myself though. Tequila's my shiz.

I found nothing wrong with pairing Whiskey and Scotch.
Irish Whiskies are great. Bourbons are great. Canadian Whisky can be good too, even.
Scotch owns them all, of course, but you have to have really good Tequila to even approach any of the others.
Vodka is just a mixer. Gin is barely more and, again, you have to get really good stuff for it to be alright. There are good Rums so maybe I'm being harsh there but damn.
I've never had any Brandy I liked.

the worst gin is far better than the worst vodka, tequila, whiskey, rum, etc. having had both ends of the spectrum (generic grocery store gin vs. bombay sapphire) and everything in between i think gin is the least offensive drink out there.

If we're talkin' straight liquor (no mixed-drink shit), I'd definitely go with tequila, but none of that Jose Cuervo / Sauza bullshit... Go with the three C's of tequila: CORZO, CORAZON, or CORRELAJO. Patron is alright, but only the silver... I prefer blanca tequilas to the reposado or anejos. 100% agave is the only true tequila. Anything less is tainted.

I don't understand comments like this. Isn't good vodka supposed to be defined by the absence of any distinct taste? How can someone say that vodka is "yummy"? I mean, sure, it goes down easy. It's great as a mixer. It's great when you don't want to feel weighed down by the alcohol and you don't want a hangover. But that doesn't make it yummy.

I think "vodka" literally translates as "tasteless liquor" or something similar in Russian. I should probably have looked it up before posting it, but whatev.
I still haven't been able to get into the Scotch thing. Maybe it's just because I have no stomach lining so I try not to even do shots anymore, but my tastebuds still register Scotch as painful. Perhaps youth is to be blamed? Although, I always have some whiskey and waters on the anniversary of my pop's death and that's kinda decent, but my understanding is that to mix Scotch with water is looked upon as being a tasteless bag of monkey shit by Scotch people, correct?

Lastgreatman, because I usually find your posts informative and generally veering towards the same ground covered by my own posts, I must recommend attempting a fine scotch. If you want to start out with a little bit of water mixed in to mellow it, then do it. I'm a Scotch drinker, probably considered a discerning Scotch drinker, and I still throw a couple ice cubes in to mellow out some of the peatier Scotches (hell, sometimes even a little water). Don't let the whole "Scotch should always be served neat" mantra play against you, dude. I would recommend a mild Macallen or Glenmorangie 12 year old for a nice scotch that is affordable. It's an acquired taste and if you;ve ever had a bad experience drinking too much Scotch from your youth, you may never take to it, but I think it's worth a shot to try again. And again, fuck the people who frown upon Scotch mixed with water. very few Scotch drinkers actually started out drinking scotch "neat". I certainly didn't. I started out with handlebars of Dewar's mixed with copious amounts of water. Eventually, the water becomes unnecessary as it takes away from the taste that will grow on you.

Nothingman, right back at you with regards to the general sense of agreement with your posts. If you're bringing any Scotch to the fest let me know and we should get together and try it out.
You just reminded me of a funny story (at least, I love it). Knew a guy by the name of Dave who was a pretty serious Scotch drinker in his 50s or so. Serious in the respect that he drank a fucking shitload of it, every day in the bar, ordering one Dewar's after another. One day he came in and shrugged off the bartender's offer of Dewar's, ordering something new out of nowhere, something top-shelf (Glenfiddich maybe, if I'm spelling that correctly). Naturally, all of us regulars perked up wondering why this man who'd consumed at least five Dewar's in our presence every single day for several years was suddenly a changed man. My dad inquired whether he had won the lottery, or more likely just got done blowing a wealthy man. Dave said, "Nah, I went over to my mother's to have dinner with her last night. Usually I stop by in the afternoon, before I come here. When she kissed me on the cheek she pulled away with a shriveled face and an upturned nose and told me that my breath smelled 'cheap.' So fuck Dewar's."

Nice! Yeah, I went through a stretch of "Dewar's Only" for about a year. then I mixed in some premiums. Now, Dewar's almost has a tequila aftertaste to me (but I'll drink it on airplanes if they have nothing else). Last night, my wife and i had friends over and I downed a fifth of Balvenie 12 year Doublewood. I can't begin to describe how happy I was all night. Add in the Florida victory, some good poker playing, and the only bad thing that happened was some of my wife's friends MAY have tried to steal pills from me, straight out of my medicine cabinet. If they would've asked, I would've given them some (as they usually do ask) but I think they were all tweaked last night. Uh oh, verring off topic... Back to alcohol.

Homie... medicine cabinet? C'mon, you're practically asking for it if you leave your bottles in there, even if you're a grown-ass man with a wife and shit, but particularly if you're a grown-ass man with a wife with tweaker friends. At this point I throw fucking everything in the safe when tweakers are about--drugs, money, electronic equipment, pets, everything.
nothingman00
04-03-2007, 02:02 PM
Yeah, but they aren't usually tweaked. they're cool chicks and pay weekly visits to our place (for the most part) to drink wine and shoot the shit. But when I opened the door last night, I saw a familiar glazed, dancing eyes, look and immediately went and grabbed a bottle of pills to put in my pocket for safe-keeping. I just had bad vibes from the get-go. These are strictly personal pills (I just stock up sometimes) so I don't feel the need for a safe. Shit, I've known these girls for 8-10 years (before I even knew my wife). But I did get a bad vibe, put a bottle in my pocket, then in the middle of playing cards, I noticed they had ventured into our bedroom. I sent my wife into our master bathroom and when she walked in, one of the girls was putting on makeup. It was 2AM, and nobody was trying to hook up... they were only in there for a minute, tops, with no supervision, but something tells they were in a different state of mind and didn;t even think to ask. Maybe they were doing bumps. Who knows? Likely scenario is that they needed something to help them come down and didn't want to take a chance on me saying "no".

Oh, and kimery, I did end up giving them like 5-6 Xanax at about 3AM (mainly because they were tweaking so hard that it was killing my poker skills). But, I made sure to say "If you guys ever want any pills just fuckin' ask, OK?". Not sure if they picked up on it, because they just called me, woke me up at 9:45 (I usually sleep till noon or so and they know it) and asked me if I could hook up Adderall for them. So very angry right now. Adderall isn't exactly easily attainable in mass quantities (unlike Valium or Xanax).

Absinthe (unless you drink MASSIVE amounts of the RIGHT KIND) is not a hallucinogen. You can only get the hallucinogenic variety in some parts of Europe and Mexico (at least that I know of).
Oh, and it doesnt taste all that good...think black licorice with a slightly bitter edge.

I second that.
You don't hallucinate at all, you just get shit-faced drunk in little to no time. (Because of the high level of alcohol)

Hehe....you'd be more likely to hallucinate from multiple shots of 151 than from the US version of absinthe...lol

This goes for Europe and Mexico as well, check Erowid if you don't believe me.

True, though I found a guy in Prague (this was back in 2000) who took us to a little apothecary type place (really weird vibes-like walking into the past) that smelled like rubber (not like tires or burnt rubber, but just, um, rubber).
Anyways, I had been asking everyone (I mean EVERYONE) for real absinthe. Nothing that comes with an absinthe label contains enough thujone to make it worthwhile. Anyway, to make a long story short (not a nothingman specialty), I'm 99% positive that we drank real absinthe. It was in a brown corked bottle, but not like a wine bottle. We drank the entire bottle between 5 of us and I did not trip and really, thanks to a high alcohol tolerance, didn't get hammered either. Just a nice buzz and a little bit of a stomachache. Yeah, I know it would be a much better story if I actually hallucinated, but I didn't, and I was trying HARD. Unless the dude was just pulling a prank (he drank it too) then I see no reason it wouldn't have been real, old-timey absinthe.

Nothingman, yo, fuck all this noise, let's make some goddamn absinthe. You and I can do the research, failing that, we'll just dump some wormwood in a bottle of scotch and hope for the best. I'll drink first. If I die, you don't drink. Or drink half what I drank.

an old coworker of mine from Hungary makes his own absinthe that will make you trip, although you still have to be a hardcore boozehound to get keep enough of it down to make it happen.
and btw, absinthe is one of the foulest tasting concoctions on the planet. fucked up repugnant shit.
when I lived in Massachusetts I had a roomate from england who's mom and dad bottled that shit with wormwood... not too much though to where i couldnt keep it down but yeah. his parents would ship it to him along with some weed, lol. Im surprised he had never been caught with the shit though.
I loved it. I didn't think it tasted awful at all actually. but then again I was high and the inside of my mouth was like a carpet and I couldn't really taste anything anyway. it was kinda like... being on shrooms.

That is why I like Sambuka, has the black licorice taste that Jager has but a bit less harsh. They shake it which makes it cloudy and it is one of the smoothest shots I have ever done. And it is a warm fuzzy kind of buzz as apposed to Jager which for me is a rip my clothes off and jump in the hot tub naked before I puke kinda buzz.

Try Fernet!!! I remember learning about Fernet when I bartended at the Polo Club Cantina afew years ago. The Argentine Polo players would only party after a big tournament ended. I had never heard of it before, but they assured me that if their friends knew I had it in the bar, it wouldn't go to waste. They went through 6 full bottles the first party night! Apparently it's what is referred to as a "Digestivo" or after dinner apertif. The Italian herbs in it act as a digestive agent that soothes the stomach. (Very much like "bitters" does.) With as shitfaced as they got that night, I didn't expect to see them anytime soon, but, alas...Because of the Fernet, none of them got sick or hungover, and returned throughout the week prior to the next tournament.
