I saw that They Might Be Giants are playing some radio station festival in Vegas sometime in May, and started wishing they were coming to Coachella. They seem to be more of an "east coast" band, so maybe that's unrealistic.
I saw them in '92 and they were cool, but I kind of "grew out of them" and didn't pay attention to them for about 10 years. Then I saw that documentary about them...now I love 'em way more that I did when I was in college.
They seem to be very misunderstood...people perceive them to just be "wacky", but they've written some of the saddest, bleakest, most poetic songs. They just wrap them in wacky sounds sometimes. (Less now than they used to do.) "End Of The Tour"? Forget about it...gets me teary-eyed every time.
Anyway, it's a long shot, but their warm-up tour starts May 3rd, so who knows. Let them do an acoustic set in the Mohave or something.

I used to love their songs when I was a kid, and learned to appreciate them within the past couple years.. they would be a cool add.

They Might Be Giants?
For a second I thought this said "TMMBT" and I was like... "The Mighty Mighty Bosstones!?!?! I LOVE the Mighty Mighty Bosstones!!!"
However, this is not the case.
To be honest, the only They Might Be Giants song I know, is the Malcolm In The Middle theme song. Haha
But Im up for TMBG anyways... or better yet... The Mighty Mighty Bosstones!!!!

Hmmm...maybe that's just a common thing with their fans. You like them when you're young because they seem fun...then you get too "hip" for them when you're in your angry 20's and feel too "grown-up" for them. Then you ACTUALLY grow up at age 30 and realize what geniuses they are. :)
Here's an interesting review of a TMBG tribute album. The reviewer expresses a frustration I can relate to...that two guys who should be incredibly respected songwriters insist on sabotaging themselves with goofyness.

Um, did someone say "Fountains of Wayne"? ;)
Although I think a Coachella set might be too short for TMBG, I think they'd make a great addition.

They also did the theme for the Daily Show, which is a cover of a Bob Mould song.

"Son I am able" she said "though you scare me." "Watch" said I "beloved" I said "watch me scare you though." Said she "able am I, son."

Good point, although FoW COULD have a stack of hits with the right promotion.
TMBG is somehow too bizarre for the mainstream, and too uncool for the underground. In the documentary, Ira Glass points out that their style is so "specific" that he feels bad for them, because they can't enjoy it as an outsider. Something like "If they weren't IN the band, and they heard it on accident, you know they would just love it."
Anyway, apparently the answer to my rhetorical title question is "yes". I expected more "shut up, faggot" :)
