These are some of the greatest DJ's around today! Have you ever actually WATCHED a great DJ at work? It's comparable to a great guitarist ripping an amazing solo for about 45 mins!!!

Thats pretty sweet that Cut Chemist has been added. As for the other DJs, I have never heard before.
However, some bands would be nice.
Mars Volta? Tom Waits? Primus? Iggy and The Stooges?

because i'm not a closed minded rocker? I love bands, but I cringe when people act like electronic artists aren't talented by saying everything is sampled it shows how ignorant they are.

I agree. I used to discredit electronic music. Until I really started to listen to it and realize how complex it is and how fun it is as well.

I think if a lot of the people you speak about were to listen to more underground electronic music, they would appreciate it more. I, for one, am not a fan of electronic music in the least bit. Can't stand listening to the stuff. However, I will admit that some of the shit those guys pull off it pretty cool. Even if it's a sample, if they can take one already written song, do some funky stuff with it and throw it into a totally different song, that's pretty impressive (if it actually sounds good). The problem is, unless you look for it or know people that listen to a lot of electronic music, you'd never hear any good stuff. Any electronic music that the average person is going to hear is garbage. I know tons of people who simply think all electronic music is like Moby. Eeeeeewww

I dunno about you but I came of age with punk. All the azzholes with the spandex and lion manes were the ones that thought masturbatory guitar solo's were the shit. Like the JAMC said once, anything more than a 20 minute set and you start to yawn.

I am admittedly uneducated in the field of electronic music, so please forgive me beforehand if I say something ignorant.

I think that electronic music has legitimate artistic value, but it is significantly different than a band. People tend to get upset if you say DJs aren't musicians, but to me musicians are people who play instruments. I wouldn't say DJs are not musical, just not necessarily musicians. Its not a derogatory statement any more than saying that Charlie Kaufman is not an actor, but maybe its just me.

Bull shi t, now I respect a DJ very much but it takes 1/6 the talent that it takes to be a great guitarest. A dj can putr a song on press a button then wait a few minutes untill he does anything. Once a guitarist stops moving his fingers or strumming the guitar the music completely stops. You can leanr how to work turn tables in a matter of a few weeks and be good at it, it takes years to master the guitar

absolutely not

the turntables are a very complex and difficult instrument to use EFFECTIVELY. any asshole can do hammer-ons and pull-offs until his or her face melts, but to control two records, scratch on precise beats, switch out records WHILE scratching, that takes some talent. besides it takes an extensive knowledge of records, music in general in order to find the perfect records to mix in. beyond that it takes ear training in order to determine what music would sound good against another type of music. in fact I would switch around your last formula: it takes a few weeks on the guitar to learn chords and structures; it takes years to play the tables and not make it sound like one is simply beginning and starting the record.

Boy, I don't think anyone has used the term "rocker" since the 70's!
Maybe I am a "rocker" but, that doesn't mean I'm closed minded.
I just don't think it takes much to be DJ.
Alot of practice yes. Alot of talent.. N-O!

easy now crew...

i am both a dj and guitarist. i am proficient in both forms. ive played in bands for 11 years and been djing for 8yrs. my opinion on this thread is this:

guitarist and bands have a basic formula that they both follow. few bands stray from this formula and form their unique sound different than what 80% already play.

djs also have a formula they follow. djs like live musicians have the ability to improvise in many ways. unfortunately most do not because they might lack the skill or imagination to do so. certain djs like dj craze, richie hawtin, dj shadow, felix the housecat, z-trip, cut chemist etc... are EXTREMELY talented and should be watched.

to compare the worlds best dj to the worlds best guitarist is very much like comparing apples to oranges. yes they are both musical but, they dont have much else in common.

a good dj can rock any crowd anywhere anytime. not all dj's should be stereotyped.a good guitarist usually needs a good band otherwise they arent rocking more than 10-20 minutes before that shit gets tired. a good band can vibe for hours and put on a hella show.

its all up to personal preference. i noticed after starting this reply that this debate can go on forever but, all in all...show respect for those who are there to entertain. appreciate and give an effort to watch cut chemist, or dj shadow work over the decks, and samplers etc...

to all the kids who are only into the electronic music, check out how the bands never break stride, improvise all while putting on a live performance.

let your mind be free from stereotypes, open up your ears...you might just like what you hear.

I disagree. IN a matter of weeks you may THINK you're good... Ask Cut Chemist if he was "good" in a matter of weeks...

Also, DJing is not JUST sampling and beat matching. Being able to scratch for fills is a fine art.

I like all kinds of music, but Cut Chemist is boring live. Left halfway through his show in San Francisco along with everyone else. So it doesnt matter if its a Dj or a band- because the addition is lackluster
