Wait... why is this argument going on in the Justice thread?

As far as I was involved this was the evolution:
1) I tried to say Justice wasn't that big of a deal, they were last year's "it" Sahara Act, and that the same thing would happen to SMD or Boys Noize this year (message board love-wise)
2) Somebody said "If it was going to happen to SMD and BN it would have happened by now"
3) I said Justice was already pretty big in hardcore electronica fans eyes and in Europe and they had some big singles but they still managed to "sneak up on" some message board people at Coachella this year, thereby disproving the theory in statement 2)
4) This then evolved into, I believe, what Daft Punk's Coachella set meant for their popularity and the public's awareness of them.
5) So, I believe, the debate really has become "What did the Coachella performance mean for Justice's popularity expressed in terms of what it meant for Daft Punk's".
But I may be wrong. I'm friends with Dave Wang.

It's not that the Coachella set specifically did it, but that pre-pyramid nobody was asking Daft to headline their festivals. Period.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Supre mentioned a while back how Coachella tried and tried to get Daft Punk sice the beginning in '99

That's not really saying much.

You can't compare their fame pre-Coachella to now. Their Coachella set is probably as responsible as anything for the increasing popularity of dance music, and Daft are far bigger than they've ever been because of it too. It sure as fuck isn't Electroma's fault.

Oh give me a fucking break. That's just fucking wrong. They didn't need Electroma for shit. All of you were fucking toddlers back then it seems. Daft Punk (and to a large extent Chemical Bros) were instrumental in breaking electronica to the masses here. They were among the first real electronic acts on the fucking radio in the US after fucking KLF and Technotronic.

Do any of you fucking brain surgeons remember the buzz that was around DP when they announced they were playing coachella? The announcement was even late, well after the first release of the poster. I remember Dani all fucking giddy because she knew the rumors around GV and when the poster was finally updated this place exploded. There were all the rumors about it being their last only show ever. People who had never heard of fucking coachella were flocking there.

Did all of you fucking crawl out of a cave on 4/27/2005? For all of you idiots to sit around and be so proud of yourselves for discovering daft punk is ridiculous. Sure their stage production is at a higher level now, but they'd be just as big right now REGARDLESS of where they played first in 2005. Get the fuck over yourselves. All of you are STILL creaming after all this time about that show but it could have happened ANYWHERE, you cuntflaps.

I agree with Jack there. Daft Punk were definately mainstream MUCH longer before Coachella. Anyone remember when One More Time came on the radio? They played it like, every 2 seconds.
I will say though, without their pyramid, they wouldn't be headlining music festivals all around the world.

Eh, it's alright.
Justice is going to be in my state, so everyone else is just a small added bonus. I guess.
But if I was in another state, then I most definantly wouldn't travel all the way to go to this festival.

I just noticed at the bottom is says more artists to be announced....
Not that Im expecting anyone noteworthy, but it's kinda nice to know there will be more...

Well, the thing is we disagree about whether or not they were pioneers. I don't personally find pulling a bunch of samples to be pioneering. Lots of people did that.

And you're still a little kid until you're old school, and even then you will remain a little kid until you either (a) stop having stupid fucking opinions or (b) stop arguing with me.

That's not what we were disagreeing about before, it's what you are disagreeing with me about now because you have found a word to pick at...

What we were really disagreeing about was you saying this...

Frankly, Daft Punk wasn't particularly good or interesting until the pyramid. Sorry.

It's amusing you call me a kid, but you are the one who is acting like a baby.

Madison Square Garden? Holy shit on a shingle! I know they are really taking off, but the biggest venue in NYC already? WTF? Does this mean their LA show will be in Staples Center? Or are they just going to play Coachella as a Sahara headliner? Hopefully not at the same time as 2008's equivalent of Arcade Fire/Blonde Redhead.

Trailmix
01-04-2008, 12:21 PM
Personally I think Justice are overrated. Sure they are good but not great. In terms of the electro house sound I think Simian Mobile and Digitalism are way better. And you all act like the Sahara tent was crazy when Justice played and it really was not. There were bigger crowds for Paul Van Dyk and Benny Benassi which is saying a lot. Of course none of these crowds topped the crowd for Daft Punk.

Well, a lot of people didn't want to leave Arcade Fire early to see Justice, or anyone. Especially since † wasn't even out yet. If they play again in 2008, their name will be on that day's subheadliner line on the poster.

Okay, allow me to clarify... Daft Punk FUCKING SUCKS COCK except in the Alive 2007 format. Alive 97 was unlistenable garbage, their album tracks are fucking boring LIKE ALL electronic albums (except Underworld), the shit sucked.

Radio stations used to play One More Time every two seconds? Pardon me, but what kind of fucking faggot radio stations did you queers listen to while driving around town in your reissued VW bugs? Cause I sure as fuck wasn't listening to One More goddamn Time. That song SUCKS.

They made it work with the pyramid because of an amazing stage display but also because they mixed the show like a rock show, and THAT'S why it's different now, that's why they're headlining festivals--and no, GV trying to get them to headline the Sahara forever does not count. They've been headlining festivals as a main act now and it's because what they started doing here isn't an electronic show anymore, it's pure fucking rock star.

I don't give a shit whether or not Coachella gets the credit, but let's not try and act like Daft Punk got popular for any reason other than their fucking videos before this. Fuck One More Time, and Around The World--selling records doesn't mean shit if you're an electronic act, playing out is the only thing that fucking matters.

Nobody's sucking any cock here, pal. And nobody's claiming to have discovered anyone, you walking embodiment of "Losing My Edge". All I was saying was that Daft Punk's pyramid tour elevated them to a new level of popularity and public awareness, and that the tour may not have been as expansive had the early dates (such as Coachella 2006) been so well received. And for the record, I got into this whole mess by stating that Justice is overrated.

The only thing the coachella set did for DP was confirm the existing hype. You're all forgetting how much buzz DP already had when they announced they were touring BEFORE they actually performed.

Just because most of you started listening to music in the Napster age and didn't know anybody who actually had coherent thoughts before 1999 doesn't mean music didn't exist back then.

They were twice as big as the chemical brothers or fatboy slim. They were possibly the biggest name in electronica from 95 to 01 and hadn't done shit until 2005.

I don't think Daft Punk were the biggest electronic name from 1995-2001. The Chemicals brothers had awesome success with Exit Planet Dust and were selling out shows everywhere, mainly in the UK and US. Many popular bands were asking them to remix their songs all the time. They were pretty big by then. And the same goes with the Prodigy; they became so huge after Fat of the land, even Glastonbury asked to headline the festival in 1997.

But I agree with the other things you said. Daft Punk were big since a decade ago, especially after the Around the world release and their 97-98 worldwide tour.

you hate Coachella.

I'm the same age as you and I never heard of Daft Punk until somebody said it here. I recognized that one more time song from a Victoria's Secret commercial but that was it. Just sayinggg.

I don't want to fight though, not even one little bit.

oh boy, an "I didn't know about Daft Punk" anecdote!
I guess coachella really was DP's big break.

And I don't necessarily hate coachella. I'm just commenting on what appears to be a little tunnel vision.

You're probably right, I'll back of a categorical statement about them being the "biggest", but they were definitely up at the top. Chemical Brothers were more important and had more hardcore fans who filled their shows. DP appealed more to mainstream who generally at the time didn't think to go to electronica "shows". It was still mainly club music.

Sasha and Digweed were exploding back in the late 90's too. It was artists like them who really dragged all the striped shirts into the arenas.

And you're right, I should have mentioned Prodigy too. They were fucking massive right around then too.

I still stand by the argument that electronic acts are MADE by live performance. Your album sales don't count for shit, if you can't make a room move you don't fucking rate. Daft didn't have a reputation for their live show that I ever heard of, at least not one worthy of one of the biggest EDM acts in the world.

dooooood!!! come on now.

you're not getting the gist. DP's current success was based on their name recognition and huge pop music appeal from their early days, not their live reputation. The buzz over their current live show is only icing on the cake. They didn't fucking need the live show reputation to sell out their recent shows. Why the fuck do you think everyone goes apeshit when they tease one of their big hits during their new tour? Has everyone just learned these songs for the first fucking time? No, you schmuck, it's because they reek of nostalgia from when they those songs were fucking huge.

Why the fuck do you think Goldenvoice went after them to close the Sahara tent in 2006? hmmmm? Were they just taking a chance on a tired old one hit wonder? Don't you think they sorta had a teensy bit of a clue that this was going to be a big deal?

Everyone's creaming of their new show, but they would have had to really fuck up for everyone not to.

I'm thinking plenty you whore, but you know goddamn well that neither one of us are going to actually give in so get nice and comfy.

(a) They wouldn't have had to really fuck up, they would've just had to do something like Alive 97.

(b) Do I think Goldenvoice was taking a bit of a chance by persuing an act that hadn't performed live in years and hadn't had a CD out since 2001? Yeah. Do you think Goldenvoice was expecting what happened? I don't see how.

(c) Sure some people knew One More Time and Around The World. Just because people know your old songs doesn't mean much. Have you fucking EVER seen a dance crowd not go apeshit when they heard a song they knew? Seriously?

And I think that the live reputation they developed had a huge effect on the popularity of their recent tour, and I don't honestly believe that you don't.

i talked to a friend at goldenvoice a couple weeks after the show and he said all he was hearing about was the dp set. he was not expecting the craziness at all. it was funny because i ran into him backstage about 10 minutes before the set, right before they cleared that area and i had to go out front. i figured he'd stick around to check it out, but guess he was too busy dealing with running the rest of the event. he missed the whole thing.

Can't correct you--just offer my opinion:

Entroducing is still one of my favorite albums ever.

That said, watching Shadow spin live is absolutely NOT like experiencing that album (or any of his others) in your home/car/headset/whatever because he usually spins a lot of hip-hop, soul, old r&b. He is an amazing dj, definitely gets a party started and keeps a solid vibe during his set (just saw him in Mill Valley a few weeks ago at the record shop that closed up)... MF has mastered the art of taking a little-known platter and making people jump up and down with it (if you ever got to see him out with Cut Chemist, wow!). I just feel like he really excels in more intimate venues and seems to lose something in a big place like Coachella or some of the larger clubs I've seen him in.

>wince< I know my point isn't clear as a bell. He's great, that's all. Carry on.

Four fun facts about Entroducing...!

1. NPR included Endtroducing..... in its list of the top 300 American songs and albums of the 20th century
2. Spin placed the album at number 69 in its list of the 100 greatest albums between 1985 and 2005
3. In 2006, the album was chosen by TIME as one of the 100 best albums of all time.
4. The entirety of the album was composed on an MPC60. The album has been cited in Guinness World Records as being the first album created entirely from sampled sources.

I don't think you understand exactly what you're getting involved in.

You exclaim that DJ Shadow is not an electronic act and then admit you don't really listen to his music. Then you accuse me of not understanding exactly what I'm getting involved in? Rife with irony this board is today.

Shadow is one of the classic examples of a crossover act. I've seen him perform many times. I've even seen his VJ act. I even inadvertantly cockblocked him once when he was attempting hitting on my friend after a show at the Independent (which is admittedly irrelevant, but I still get a kick out of it).

Shadow absolutely can be interpreted as an electronic act. RJD2 is (or at least used to be) a crossover act in the same sense. Roots in hip hop, but productions and a live act that could sometimes go either way.

I'd like to get excited about that SF date, but has anyone been to a Diplo set where he didn't fuck up a bunch of times?

NYE at Temple he was pretty good. At mezzanine he was fair. The crowd there was lame and he was just up there tagging with other people and playing a bunch of wacky shit. Most of his crowds don't really know the difference anyway. I dont' think he cares. He's probably one of those guys who's as good as he wants to be when the mood strikes him.

EDIT: actually when you put him in the context of that tour he certainly won't give a shit.

dorkfish

I've seen him play vastly different sets. He tried hard at Coachella a few years ago, and put on a good mashup/party mix type show. Later at Mezzanine he played one his more Favela inspired sets.

It was pretty packed when I went back in September for Blaqk Audio and that show was waaaay sold out, so who knows. Maybe its just how I percieve it, but it feels smaller than the Fonda. I am glad its not out or prorportion though and they didnt play the Wiltern. I think the Palladium wouldve been an option if it was still open and controlled by GV. I wont be suprised when they add a second show.

DP at the Greek in Berkeley was the shiznot, but you have never been there so I mean, you dont knwo the set up. It was all GA so I dont see how them playing the Greek HERE makes it ''cool'' or something. This group belongs in a club setting for their shows. They are only ever going to play to huge crowds like at festivals and stuff. You wonder how many people at Ultra are gonna watch them. And minus 5 points for not knowing about the venue literally up the street from your place.

I'm guessing $30. Can't believe they're doing the Mayan. The Wiltern woulda been so much better. But ey, whatevs.

Dude MSG is gonna be so worth the $60.

I'm down with Diplo though. I really wish we had DJ Mehdi considering he is my fave off of Ed Banger but maybe he'll come around with Busy P on his tour.

.

So a bigger place that wont let you come and go from being in the front unless you have a wristband is better? Also the Wiltern is a Live Nation venue, so f**k them.
