Justice wont be back at coachella next year, I remember reading somewhere that festival runners do their best to keep artists from performing 2 years in a row. Like to keep things different. (This obviously isnt always the case though, as the chems and maybe a few others have played consecutive years).
Untrue, many artists have played Coachella 2 years in a row. Especially those that played lower on the bill w/ a less desirable time slot, but rocked the fucking house. Saying that Justice will or will not play is purely speculation. Im on the will not side of the fence...
LOL!
seriously people, i dont understand what all the fuss is about ed banger/justice shirts when they are the ugliest fuckin things ive ever seen.
AGREED!
I didn't know reppin artists work is scene. Woa mama.
It isnt, but wearing their t-shirts like a walking billboard - look at me look at me Im so hip Ed Banger - JEW STEECE! - nurave - nurave - Im with it - Im hip!

Well uh you haven't met me or seen me walking down the street so you wouldn't know. PLUS, I don't consider it a Justice shirt. To me, it's a SO ME shirt and I respect the guys work very much which is why I represent his shirt. I would've bought it even if it wasn't a part of the shirts he made for the D.A.N.C.E.

I personally woudl tell GV to not book Justice next year, I woudl rather have them have another album under their belt in 2009 and then they end up higher on the bill of course with an even more ideal timeslot so more people coudl see what the fuss is about. If they do Coachella next year then it will be even more overkill than whats going to happen after the MTV Awards and the fall tour.

While promoting this years MTV video awards, the VJ mentioned the DANCE video by Justin? was one of the nominees. I find it very amusing that the people working and marketing the VMAs don't even know who Justice is. Anyone have intelligent theories as to why MTV is bothering to promote Justice at all? It is somewhat ridiculous to nominate a video that the station hasn't even played.

Why is everyone confused as to why Justice has a nomination? Simple answer: it's a cool video. You guys act like you've never seen "Best Foreign Video" category for the VMA's. Theres been plenty of nominations over the years for videos MTV hasnt promoted (although the last VMA I actually paid attention to was in...fuck, i think '99. All i know is it was like the return of the Chili Peppers and they played, i think promoting Californication?) Anyways, Yes I know it's up for Best video, but i who cares? they're not gonna win anyways.

lemonparty.org is awesome. One of the greatest sites on the internet. It's not really gross in a tubgirl or goatse kind of way, but very humorous with a risque edge. Like Bill Cosby if he was dirtier. Probably not best to view at work though.

best foreign video is completely different. its expected that those dont get played. video of the year is usually one of those videos thats plastered all over mtv all the time. how can you say a video is the best of the year when you dont even play it? that makes them look retarded, which they are i guess.
shakermaker113
09-08-2007, 09:44 AM
I never got the VMA's. I used to pay attention in high school, and I was terribly confused that they would always be talking about awards for "best rock video" or whatever when they were actually awarding the song, and it had nothing to do with the videos themselves. it seemed like they were just using the word 'video' because they are mtv and were one of the first people (maybe the first?) to show music videos, but it's dumb. if you're going to have video music awards, award the videos not the songs. if you're going to award the songs, don't use the word 'video'. I hate mtv. rant over.

example of an indoor performance on Jimmy Kimmel

find me in the shot, I was there
They will probably do 4 songs (in this order):
-Genesis
-D.A.N.C.E.
-Waters of Nazareth
-We Are Your Friends
IF they do more than 2 songs after they finish the taping.
You gonna scalp em?

We went to the Jimmy Kimmel show just to see Spank Rock. It was so completely not worth waiting hours in line and sitting through an hour of Jimmy's lame show to see Spank Rock play 3 songs. Getting close to the stage is impossible unless you're sitting on the very left side of the audience, since that's who gets let out of the room first to the indoor stage.

They kind of changed it now, if you have performance specific tickets you do get priority and they tend to sit you in a certain area for that. So if you had regular tv tickets you kind of get shortchanged on being close.

well, im somewhat of a cube jockey, but not really. im IT, so depending on how the day goes, I may have to talk to a lot of people throughout the day. i also have to do quite a bit of critical thinking sometimes. although sometimes i can get away with being a zombie, but not to the extent of how fucked i would be if i didnt get back from TJ until 5 am. I would have to take the day off if i wanted to go to this, but ive already used up a crapload of time off, so not sure. ill have to think about it...

I remember news reports that they had a huge backup when the new passport laws went into effect and that they granted temporary amnesty to US citizen coming back from mexico/canada that could prove they had applied for a passport but had not received it yet. I would go here if you have any questions: http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html
It used to be 3 months but now I think its down to 6 weeks. But here's the catch. You should carefully read the requirements to apply for a passport because you need a certified birth certificate (or I think the original will be OK I dont know) to successfully get a passport. And here is the rub, to get a certified birth certificate (if you were born in California) is going to take 4-6 weeks period. So you cant even apply for the passport until you get that. So I would look into that man.

This is what Kingsblend couldnt find you so you know whats up. Glad I have mine and it doesnt expire until 2010 MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH.
The U.S. Departments of State and Homeland Security announced Friday, June 8, that U.S. citizens traveling to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or countries in the Caribbean region, who have applied for, but not yet received passports, can re-enter the United States by air. This accommodation will expire at the end of September, and beginning October 1, 2007, all U.S. Citizens traveling outside the United States will be required to present a valid passport to enter and depart from the United States. This accommodation does not mean that Americans are exempt from meeting the entry requirements of Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or countries in the Caribbean region, some of which require a passport, certified birth certificate, or other evidence of citizenship for entry.
We have reached out to the governments of countries affected by WHTI to consult with them about our announcement. Many of them have agreed to take a flexible approach toward their own entry requirements. For the most current information on entry requirements at their destination, travelers should contact their airline.
U.S. citizens traveling to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or countries in the Caribbean region who have applied for, but not yet received passports, can re-enter the United States by air by presentation of a government issued photo identification and Department of State official proof of application for a passport through September 30, 2007. The federal government is making this accommodation for air travel due to longer than expected processing times for passport applications in the face of record-breaking demand. U.S. Citizens who departed the U.S. under this travel accommodation prior to October 1, 2007 with Department of State official proof of application and government-issued identification will be readmitted with these same documents if returning to the United States after September 30.
The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) was mandated by Congress in the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 to strengthen border security and facilitate entry into the United States for citizens and legitimate international visitors. WHTI requirements for air travel took effect on January 23, 2007.
Adults who have applied for but not yet received a passport should present government-issued photo identification and an official proof of application from the U.S. Department of State. Children under the age of 16 traveling with their parents or legal guardian will be permitted to travel with the child’s proof of application status. Children traveling alone should carry a copy of their birth certificate, baptismal record or a hospital record of birth in the United States in addition to their passport application status documentation. This accommodation applies to all American citizens who apply for passports, until September 30, when this accommodation period ends. U.S. citizens with pending passport applications can obtain proof of application at: http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/status/status_2567.html.
Since implementation, U.S. Customs and Border Protection has and will continue to exercise its current authorities in unique circumstances to allow individuals subject to the WHTI requirements into the United States based on other evidence of identity and citizenship.
Travel document security remains a top priority for the U.S. Government. Both the 9/11 Commission and the U.S. Congress urged strengthening of travel documents to prevent entry of terrorists across our borders, reduce use of fraudulent documents, and speed up entry procedures.

If Justice isnt ''sold out' right now that means somebody put their tickets back in the mix. When I checked hey were out. I am sure any one of you who wants to go can get in there. Also, get show tickets and you can still watch them. Performance only ones just make it better because you get to be up front.

wtf are regular taping?

OK, so when you go to Jimmy Kimmel, there are 2 different kinds of tickets you can have. One is strictly for the show. Like you wanted to see Jessica Alba or whatever right? Then lets say Justice was the musical guest. Then there are performance specific tickets, either the performance is indoors or outside depending on the artist. If they are performing indoors and you have performance specific tickets, you get to be in the group of people that is all up close and personal with the band, cause there is like 2 feet between you and them while they perform. Odds are if you are in front you get on camera and stuff If you didnt get performance specific tickets you are in the back and watch it etc etc etc. If you had performance specific tickets and it was outside, its a whole different thing. They have a seperate line and all that and they let you in about the same time as the in studio audience. You just wait there in front of the stage and they show the taping happenign inside on the screens. Then they like reheares a bit how they will do the cameras and stuff before the band comes on, they put the camera in the crowd and make you cheer. Then when its time for the band to come on they move everyoen from inside the studio to the outside and the guests watch form the side of the stage. they do 2 songs for TV then after that its up to the band to play a few more or finish. If its indoors, usually 2 or 3 more songs. If its outside, I have had performances be like 7 or 8 songs which was nice, but that rarely happens. Anywya, hopefully that explains things. Keep askign questions if I confused you.

Regular tickets - you get to watch the show (in chairs) & then watch the live performance in the lobby. Also, this studio seating usually allows up to 4 people, whereas the concert only is up to 2 people.
My experience too is that the artist usually sings 5 songs - but as few as 2. That's why it's a mini-concert.

Turning the beat around again
The dance-music scene embraces a new strain of disco along with a rock attitude.
By Margaret Wappler, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
A few months after British magazine NME shouted it from the rooftops, singer Jamie Reynolds pulled the rug out from under "nu rave" -- the sly new term surgically attached to his band, Klaxons. Turns out he made it up to get his band attention.
"It was funny that something that didn't ever really disappear could in fact be new," Reynolds said. "And then to put that to as many journalists as possible to get them to talk about nothing."
"Nu rave" might be a farce, but it hints at something bigger -- a thriving dance-music scene that has spawned several mutations. These strains include the minimalist dance-punk of LCD Soundsystem, the analog classicism of Simian Mobile Disco, the fanatical electro-thrash of Justice, the international amalgam of M.I.A., the agitated funk of !!! (Chk Chk Chk) and the art-schooled disco-sleaze of Cansei de Ser Sexy.
Not only are the pop-and-locking kids in fluorescent T-shirts with Tetris-like graphics crazy for it, England's music establishment is sold -- Klaxons just snagged the Nationwide Mercury Prize for its psychedelic "Myths of the Near Future," a debut better described as post-rave paranoia.
Beyond the dance-tent bookings at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival or the playlist at the Echo Park dance night Check Yo' Ponytail, the current dance-music scene has embraced the once-maligned aesthetics of technology, showmanship and creative appropriation. Synthesized into a live show, the result is communal euphoria.
It's also a response to the fickle tastes of the indie kids, perhaps the most effective, time-honored catalyst for change.
"There's this periodic rediscovery by indie rockers that dancing is fun," said Simon Reynolds, author of the rave and post-punk histories "Generation Ecstasy" and "Rip It Up and Start Again." "Lots of these bands are going back to the punk-funk thing. . . . Kids hearing it now maybe don't realize that in the '70s, for instance, every white band wanted that Chic guitar sound."
Disco is one of the touchstones of the new movement, but most influences come from another decade.
In the early to mid-'90s, dance music was considered intellectually vacuous and critically inferior to authenticity-obsessed grunge and indie rock. A few dance acts such as Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk and Prodigy were able to squeeze through the critical vise and score covers at rockist institutions like Spin magazine.
James Murphy, LCD Soundsystem's frontman, considers the division between dance music and rock flimsy, though he doesn't deny once harboring a bias: "I used to think of dance music as really cheesy."
Historically, Murphy thinks the genre has suffered from harsher prejudices. "I think that a lot of reaction against disco was racist and homophobic," he said. "There was this criticism that it wasn't serious rock white-dude music, sort of like when you're a little boy and you say, 'That's girl music.' "
Perhaps it stayed in the shadows because of racism and homophobia, but the specific critiques, that dance music is fatuous and coldly technological, were considered endemic. Nowadays, those qualities are celebrated, an idea that Daft Punk popularized with its 1997 debut, "Homework."
The Parisian duo, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, that performs in robot attire designed by rocker-designer Hedi Slimane, have established itself as the godfathers of the current scene.
PEACHES, the Canadian artist who sets nasty tangles of guitars against slithery beats, remembers when she first heard Daft Punk.
"I realized that dance music could have a rock attitude without sounding industrial. It was brutal but minimal," she said via e-mail from Berlin, where she is recording a new album. "I just decided to take my favorite parts from each genre and mix it together. Dance music has the sickest sounds and can be harder sounding than any guitar. There is nothing like a killer rock riff."
For Sri Lankan native Maya Arulpragasam, known as M.I.A., dance music's clean surfaces provide an ideal platform for launching bigger political ideas. "It's really primitive, but also mathematical," she said from San Francisco, where she was making a video with Spike Jonze. For "Arular," "I needed to make it danceable while I said some heavy stuff . . . the things going on in Sri Lanka were so shocking and outrageous."
She also points toward other dance genres that have international muscle -- dancehall or grime, for instance -- as important parts of the equation. "The scene is so morphed, but that's what makes it different from the '90s Ibiza-style dance music. Different kids are bringing different elements to it."
Steve Aoki, the hustling, jet-setting Angeleno with a record label (Dim Mak) that has evolved into a fashion line (designed by Klaxons' Jamie Reynolds and Simon Taylor-Davis) and lifestyle brand, posits the harder strains of dance music as the new punk rock.
"Punk as a term is more than a sound; it's a culture," he said. "Ten years ago, I got involved with hard-core punk for the screaming guitars and the energy of watching 100 kids jumping along. You can't even describe that energy."
Aoki is the American ambassador for much of the European-based dance scene, or as Pedro Winter, head of the Paris-based record label Ed Banger, says, "He's the Los Angeles me." Both proudly reference the Dim Mak party at Echoplex the day after Coachella as the frenetic apex of their efforts. That momentum lives on in events such as Dim Mak's upcoming second annual Neighborhood Festival.
Winter, who manages Daft Punk, has gathered a tribe of artists, including Mr. Oizo and Uffie, around his marquee band Justice, the production duo Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay, known for hypnotizing and ferocious concerts. It's a page stolen not only from Daft Punk but also from Mick Jagger and Slayer.
"We are completely into the rock-star thing," Winter said. "I'm not into electronic music. I'm into entertainment music."
At the same time, Aoki and Winter, standing so close to the blazing sun of trend-setting, realize the value in cultivating their artists. "We are throwing parties in Singapore, Berlin and Melbourne," Winter said. "We are wearing the same sneakers, same coats. This is the crazy part and the funny thing. . . . We are a family who wants to grow together. We take our time. Let's not do everything in one or two years."
M.I.A. sees it as a family too, but one that transcends the differences.
"Anything can happen in dance music. You have gay people, white, black people. It doesn't really have a face. It's experimental constantly."
