So my friends and I were chatting about next year's Coachella and what could beat Rage, Daft Punk, Tool and NIN. They would have to either bring back Nirvana or Tupac!!!!

How could you leave DEPECHE MODE out of one of the headliners to beat? Seriously - they were definetly a gem to have at Coachella - living influential legends - 25 + years, millions of records sold.. millions of concert goers buying tickets at the mere mention of Depeche Mode going on tour when ever they go on tour... such a diehard fan base..... such a influential band across 3 decades... come on.... Don't forget about the Mode!

Back on topic though - I think it would take the Police, Prince, U2 to really surprise me at possibly outdoing the previous headliners.... though I can't see U2 doing a festival like Coachella..... who knows?

radiohead

smashing pumpkins if they actually decide to start playing shows right around that time. if they start playing shows this summer or fall then it wont count. also this only applies if they are still a fucking band by this time next year

i hope they are never going to have a band like u2, the police, pink floyd etc. too many people going for just one band, too many people that just wont get it

oh yea the smiths too, but that will never happen. i like morrissey solo anyway, and johnny marr with modest mouse is just too good to break up at this point

Here are just a few of the ideas that have been kicking around this board for months:

David Bowie
Portishead
Radiohead
Beck
White Stripes
Smashing Pumpkins(or what's left of them)
Gorillaz
Prince

I personally think Tom Waits will never play Coachella. He is a self professed recluse, and to my knowledge has never played a festival.

Also, the Talking Heads are also an extremely long shot as David Byrne is still estranged from the rest of the band.

I doubt Prince would play, but stranger things have happened.(Madonna 06)

I agree big time. So many of their songs seem like such an integral part of electronic music and music in general for the past few decades. I consider having seen them a big accomplishment.

I'm very glad to see a lot of demand for the Talking Heads on here. That and My Bloody Valentine would be fucking incredible.

I've also noticed some nostalgia on here for mainstream 90s alternative bands, but whatever :P

In fact there are already rumors... Not of Coachella, but of a reunion.

There have been rumours forever. I cannot take any of them seriously until it is annouced. Jason Bonham would be a great choice for a drummer. Also, I heard once in an interview, that Dave Grohl was talking with John Paul Jones in the 90s about a possible Zeppelin reunion, and asked if Dave wanted to play drums, if it went on. Obviously, that never happened. Dont ask for a source or anything, its something I heard in the radio a few years ago and its just something that has stuck in my mind. Also, just as a side note, Dave Grohl and John Paul Jones are good friends and JPJ helped out with on the acoustic side of In Your Honour.

Can someone put poison in the coachella water bottles??...O-Zone, are you joking?? Maybe they should make a "I think I can be a DJ because I know how to push the play button" tent and just have Tiesto, Paul Van Dyk, Paul Jokenfold, and Benny Bennasi spin all day long with O-zone closing all 3 nights...that would be fantastic!

Please, anything but radiohead. I live about a mile from one of Thom Yorke's houses and encounters have reinforced my belief I garnered from his music: He's a pretentious tosser.

Tool are my favourite headliner, but i'd see the smiths, a reformed led zep, king crimson or a resurrected zappa the competitors!

Did love Ratm too. Coachella is where it's at, concerning headliners!

If they don't get Radiohead next year they better have Prince. He has a new album coming out it makes sense.

Robert Plant and Jimmy Page not as headlining but just in the bill. That would be cool and i think they can do something different just them two.

This would be perfect actually. I love all 3 groups but the only one I would camp out @ the main stage for would be the Smiths. In other words, I am free to wander to all the other stages!! Namely the Gobi tent (always the most interesting).

I figure that since this year Coachella got one of the Lolla headliners (RHCP) that next year it'll get another (Pearl Jam), and of course it's about fucking time that R.E.M. play Coachella...

Although, honestly, the Smiths reunion is out there, so realistically, here's how I see the festival being headlined:

The White Stripes (*groan*)
Pearl Jam
R.E.M./The Police

i belive soundgarden or no doubt would have that "extra" cool thing to it, if they would play.
portishead also, but they aint that big for a headliner

if a perfect circle would do a one off just for coachella, now that would be niceeee

For the millionth time people, Floyd are not getting back together unless it is for a noble, virtuous cause & Coachella is hardly one. GV would have to donate all the proceeds from ticket sales to Africa before they would consider it. Rumors of Led Zepplin reuniting with Jason Bonham have been a mainstay of the rock rumor mill for years on end so don't hold your breath for that one. If it ever happens (anywhere) I will be incredibly suprised. Besides I don't think Jason can pull off "Four Sticks" only his poppa could do that. TO ALL THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE THEIR HEADS SO FAR UP RADIOHEAD'S ASS PULL OUT & TAKE A BREATH FOR A MINIUTE! Yeah their great & all but how many times do you need to see this band live especially at Coachella!!! Same goes for the Arcade Fire!!! Been there done that I personally hope both of them don't play Coachella for another 7- 10 years!!! If I were to want a repeat of someone it would be Kraftwerk but I would rather GV keep the repeats limited & few & far between. I will be content with Portishead this year & elated for My Bloody Valentine. It could only get better with Swervedriver & yes Talking Heads would be fantastic as would the majority of others already stated previously except PHISH! We don't need no stinkin nitrous tanks at Coachella.

Yeah man! Tell me you wouldn't just die.

C'mon. We all know that a 20-minute encore of "Dragostea Din Tei" AKA "Numa Numa" would easily beat out the past legendary performances by the Arcade Fire and Daft Punk.

Radiohead is the only group I love that I have not seen live yet, so they'd be in the same league of the thread mentioned bands.

Floyd, never going to happen.
Bowie, epic but I don't think it will happen.
Prince, can't sell tickets on local rock radio markets. pity.
Outkast, only if they promised to play material from their pre Speakerboxxx/Love Below era (by that I mean no Roses and NO Heya)
U2, would pack more pot narcing geezers than Coldplay could dream of.

I think we're in for some modern bands as headliners this year, the 90s credible artist stream has already been used up by GV.

or just have Radiohead play

Radiohead<Tool

sorry.
Tool evolves your being.
Tool puts your soul thru a grinder and shoots it back at you in a million different pieces that you subsequently inspect and paint 1 by 1 and then piece back together...

(dont get me wrong, Radiohead is fucking amazing and by far the most popular band out right now. They are up there with Tool, but they dont have the literally life changing and mind expanding ideas that Tool promotes...)

This is not an argument, you cant argue against facts.
Granted, a lot of people dont really realize and grasp the power of Tool's music and message, this is highly unfortunate....

So my friends and I were chatting about next year's Coachella and what could beat Rage, Daft Punk, Tool and NIN. They would have to either bring back Nirvana or Tupac!!!!

Um....Smiths, Bowie, Talking Heads, Oingo Boingo, Zeppelin, and that's just scratching the surface. BTW - during Tool I was at Dungen and Art Brut, and I had more fun than you did.

Indie snob alert anyone? I'd make an apporpriate poster but I don't have the skillz.

I'll just say for my part that the only one of the bands you mentioned that I think make a better headliner than Tool is Zeppelin, which isn't happening. There were good bands in the 80s, we all understand, but there were good bands in the 90s as well, and people who grew up with the music know that Rage, NIN, Tool, and Daft Punk are all among the best of the 90s bands.

And the 90s bands are a)still making music and b)pertinent to today's music scene. That's why they make good headliners.

Edit: Not that Daft Punk or NIN for that matter are necessarily bands...

BTW: It's this mindset that is wrong with people; "I had more fun than you!"...who the fuck cares?
I see that you don't like Tool, and I don't care if you like them; I know that you're the one missing out.

All I'm trying to do is let you know how big of a force this band is. In 10 years youre going to realize that Tool is legendary, they are in the same field as Zeppelin, Floyd, etc. And while you were busy with "Dungen and Art Brut" you could've been experiencing self-evolution, awareness, and growth at the Tool show...

Enjoy yourself, influence others.
Think for yourself, promote open-minds.
