View Full Version : Should Coachela go to 4 days?
kroqken

I was thinking that since the Bonaroo festival is 4 days (thursday through sunday) and Coachella was such a rousing success as a 3 day festival, do you want Coachella to also be a 4 day festival? Also, do you think Goldenvoice will expand Coachella to 4 days, either next year or further down the road?

3 is the magic number.

Three is a magic number,
Yes it is, it's a magic number.
Somewhere in the ancient, mystic trinity
You get three as a magic number.
The past and the present and the future.
Faith and Hope and Charity,
The heart and the brain and the body
Give you three as a magic number.
It takes three legs to make a tri-pod
Or to make a table stand.
It takes three wheels to make a ve-hicle
Called a tricycle.
Every triangle has three corners,
Every triangle has three sides,
No more, no less.
You don't have to guess.
When it's three you can see
It's a magic number.
A man and a woman had a little baby,
Yes, they did.
They had three in the family,
And that's a magic number.
3-6-9, 12-15-18, 21-24-27, 30.
3-6-9, 12-15-18, 21-24-27, 30.
Multiply backwards from three times ten:
Three time ten is (30), three times nine is (27),
Three times eight is (24), three times seven is (21),
Three times six is (18), three times five is (15),
Three times four is twelve,
And three times three is nine, and three times two is six,
And three times one is three of course.
Now take the pattern once more:
Three! . . .3-6-9
Twelve! . . .12-15-18
Twenty-one!. . .21-24-27. . .30
Now multiply from 10 backwards:
Three time ten is (30 - Keep going), three times nine is (27),
Three times eight is (24), three times seven is (21),
Three times six is (18), three times five is (15),
Three times four is twelve,
And three times three is nine, and three times two is six,
And three times one...
What is it?!
Three!
Yeah, That's a magic number.
A man and a woman had a little baby.
Yes, they did.
They had three in the family.
That's a magic number.

All they have to do is get some acts to play on Thursday night in the campgrounds & it will be 4 days. They should just make it a week like Burning Man.

No matter how many days you add on you're always gonna miss something, unless you have bands play repeated sets and fans rotate accordingly. And that's just silly. Also, it can be awful hot and dusty.
3 tickles just perfect.

Boy:
Whew! You sure gotta climb a lot of steps to get to this Capitol Building here in Washington. But I wonder who that sad little scrap of paper is?
I'm just a bill.
Yes, I'm only a bill.
And I'm sitting here on Capitol Hill.
Well, it's a long, long journey
To the capital city.
It's a long, long wait
While I'm sitting in committee,
But I know I'll be a law some day
At least I hope and pray that I will
But today I am still just a bill.
Boy:
Gee, Bill, you certainly have a lot of patience and courage.
BILL:
Well, I got this far. When I started I wasn't even a bill, I was just an idea. Some folks back home decided they wanted a law passed, so they called their local Congressman, and he said, "You're right, there oughta be a law." Then he sat down and wrote me out and introduced me to Congress. And I became a bill, and I'll remain a bill until they decide to make me a law.
I'm just a bill
Yes I'm only a bill,
And I got as far as Capitol Hill.
Well, now I'm stuck in committee
And I'll sit here and wait
While a few key Congressmen discuss and debate
Whether they should let me be a law.
How I hope and pray that they will,
But today I am still just a bill.
Boy:
Listen to those Congressmen arguing! Is all that discussion and debate about you.
BILL:
Yeah, I'm one of the lucky ones. Most bills never even get this far. I hope they decide toreport on me favorably, otherwise I may die.
Boy:
Die?
BILL:
Yeah, die in committee. Ooh, but it looks like I'm gonna live! NOW I go to the House of Representatives, and they vote on me.
Boy:
if they vote yes, what happens?
BILL:
Then I go to the Senate and the whole thing starts all over again.
Boy:
Oh no!
BILL:
Oh yes!
I'm just a bill
Yes, I'm only a bill
And if they vote for me on Capitol Hill
Well, then I'm off to the White House
Where I'll wait in a line
With a lot of other bills
For the president to sign
And if he signs me, then I'll be a law.
HOW I hope and pray that he will,
But today I am still just a bill.
Boy:
You mean even if the whole Congress says you should be a law, the president can still say no?
BILL:
Yes, that's called a veto. If the president vetoes me, I have to go back to Congress and they vote on me again, and by that time you're so old ...
Boy:
By that time it's very unlikely that you'll become a law. It's not easy to become a law, is it?
BILL: No!
But how I hope and pray that I will,
But today I am still just a bill.
MAN: He signed you, Bill Now you're a law!
BILL: Oh yes!!!

Conjunction Junction, what's your function?
Hooking up words and phrases and clauses.
Conjunction Junction, how's that function?
I got three favorite cars
That get most of my job done.
Conjunction Junction, what's their function?
I got "and", "but", and "or",
They'll get you pretty far.
"And":
That's an additive, like "this and that".
"But":
That's sort of the opposite,
"Not this but that".
And then there's "or":
O-R, when you have a choice like
"This or that".
"And", "but", and "or",
Get you pretty far.
Conjunction Junction, what's your function?
Hooking up two boxcars and making 'em run right.
Milk and honey, bread and butter, peas and rice.
Hey that's nice!
Dirty but happy, digging and scratching,
Losing your shoe and a button or two.
He's poor but honest, sad but true,
Boo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo!
Conjunction Junction, what's your function?
Hooking up two cars to one
When you say something like this choice:
"Either now or later"
Or no choice:
"Neither now nor ever"
Hey that's clever!
Eat this or that, grow thin or fat,
Never mind, I wouldn't do that,
I'm fat enough now!
Conjunction Junction, what's your function?
Hooking up phrases and clauses that balance, like:
Out of the frying pan and into the fire.
He cut loose the sandbags,
But the balloon wouldn't go any higher.
Let's go up to the mountains,
Or down to the sea.
You should always say "thank you",
Or at least say "please".
Conjunction Junction, what's your function?
Hooking up words and phrases and clauses
In complex sentences like:
Conjunction Junction, what's your function?
Hooking up cars and making 'em function.
Conjunction Junction, how's that function?
I like tying up words and phrases and clauses.
Conjunction Junction, watch that function.
I'm going to get you there if you're very careful.
Conjunction Junction, what's your function?
I'm going to get you there if you're very careful.
Conjunction Junction, what's your function?
I'm going to get you there if you're very careful.

One thing you will discover
When you get next to one another
Is everybody needs some elbow room, elbow room.
It's nice when you're kinda cozy
But not when you're tangled nose to nosy
Oh, everybody needs some elbow...
Needs a little elbow room.
That's how it was
In the early days of the U.S.A.
The people kept coming to settle though
The east was the only place there was to go.
The president was Thomas Jefferson,
He made a deal with Napoleon,
How'd you like to sell a mile or two?
}} {Or three or a hundred or a thousand?}
And so in 1803 the Louisiana Territory
Was sold to us without a fuss
And gave us lots of elbow room.
Oh, elbow room, elbow room
Got to, got to get us
Some elbow room.
It's the west or bust,
In God we trust,
There's a new land out there.
Lewis and Clark volunteered to go.
Goodbye, good luck, wear your overcoat.
They prepared for good times and for bad. (And for bad)
They hired Sacajawea to be their guide,
She led them all across the countryside.
Reached the coast, and found the most
Elbow room we've ever had.
The way was opened up
For folks with bravery.
There were plenty of fights
To win land rights,
But the West was meant to be.
It was Manifest Destiny!
The trappers, traders and the peddlers,
The politicians and the settlers,
They got there by any way they could. }} Any way they could!
The gold rush trampled down the wilderness,
The railroads spread across from east to west,
And soon the West was opened up for...
Opened up for good!
Now we jet from east to west,
Goodbye New York, Hello L.A.
But it took those early folks
To open up the way.
Now we've got a lot of room to be
Growing from sea to shining sea.
Guess that we have got our elbow room, elbow room.
But if there should ever come a time
When we're crowded up together I'm
Sure we'll find some elbow room up on the moon.
Oh, elbow room, elbow room
Got to, got to get us
Some elbow room.
It's the moon or bust,
In God we trust,
There's a new land up there!

If Coachella made it a 4 day festival, they would likely have to change the date of the festival. In April, a lot of people are still in school. Also, since its not the summer, it would be hard for a lot of people to get Thursday AND Friday off work. Not to mention the extra days needed off due to travelling.

4 days would be tough out there in the desert. They can't make it earlier to avoid the heat because of the rain. They couldn't do it much later, because it would be WAY to fucking hot. Maybe January which is the most beautiful time in the desert, but that time of year is tough to get time off - right after the holidays.
3 is the magic number.

If you got a good sized group, renting a condo/house is the best way to go. It's cheaper than a hotel.

I have no idea, I will see what I can find out on the Glasto page and their wiki. I think they modeled it after how things are structued and formats for things not the entire festival to the bone. kroqken
05-11-2007, 04:10 PM

suprefan
05-11-2007, 04:21 PM
I think having Coachella in April as it is makes it tough. Look how Friday went? It was close to selling out of course and pushing a 4th day upon everyone will have groans of having to ditch work even earlier and all that. The extra day at Roo is a half day as it is. And yeah, I mean you have get there on Weds to set up camp and all that. How many people would even bother? Not many, that campground didnt finally fill up until Saturday night pretty much. Glasto is easier because its in the summer and who in the U.K doesnt know what the deal is for that whole thing? Everyone does so its easier to get time off I would imagine. And another price hike on camping prices and ticket prices. Its all about the $$ right? I say experiment with a 4th day being a half day in a few years after 3 days has established itself. I think a lto of people shoudl be polled about it as it is, like maybe Coachella should really e mail a mass survery about how things went instead of us just posting our thoghts on here and them having to go through them all to see the good/bad thigns done each year. I know they probably get e mails about things as it is but still. I think it woudl be easier and there would be a good respoonse I imagine. Also people will keep complaining as to why things changed and they can say "well we sent our a survey and asked for your input and only so many people responded so we took that into consideration and used that info to change things". I think Stagecoach might have a problem more than Coach because that board has nobody on it and if like 100 people dictate what goes down next year and all that it will be a wake up call to all the "casual" country fans who attended.

suprefan
05-11-2007, 04:42 PM
Yeah but patience Ken. It took 7 years to expand to 3, give it 5 years tops for 4. And Paul Tollet shoudl be there in person seeing how the focus group goes. So how many of "us" should go into this group? Pick out like 100 of the people on here and see how it goes? Maybe justify your place by your veteran status? Like 2 years or less is out of the question or something?
kroqken

FOcus groups are fun and a great way to make extra money. I know that the focus group would be conducted by an outside company. The client (GV?) would watch the group behind a one way mirror. Also, many focus groups should be conducted on not just if Coachella should go 4 days but also what people like about Coachella and what they do not like. GV can easily afford to hire an outside research company to do this. They would then write a very detailed report once all of the focus groups have been completed.

OK so Dani was asking us to update out mircocommunity info since it actually helps them determine who is interested in what and all that. Sure its a good idea since its a representation of the audience but just using that and not having it being updated as much as they woudl like to doesnt cut it. Seriously everyone who buys tickets online should be emailed a survey or mailed on after the festival is over to fill out, and also provide incentive with it also.

Besides I could not see them going right from 3 days to 4 next year since this was the first time as 3 days. But if they do ever expand to 4 days they should keep the price the same. I am not worthles, I am a sardonic individual with an iconoclastic outlet. I also love to read Noam Chomsky's political works, not his linguistic writings.

I am just a decent fellow with a rapier wit and an opinionated soul. I am no worse thanb a typical male hanging out at the Beauty Bar on a Saturday night.

Seriously, wouldn't it just be SO EXCITING if Coachella became a 4 day festival. I know some of you folks oppose that, but as long as GV considers it, I still win, poll results nonewithstanding.
