So do you guys like Coachella schedules or Bonnaroos?

TomAz
05-25-2007, 10:13 AM
I prefer Coachella's myself. Bonnaroo spreads the same # of acts over more time. that ties in fine with almost everyone camping, and in/out permitted; you can go back and take a nap in the middle of the afternoon. since i don't camp it just made for really long days for me.

I like Coachella"s more. I like staying up all night 2 nights before agonizing over set times. I like PF shutting down the message board while she gets the set times uploaded. I like how Coachella feels more like a music fans festival, I mean come on, do you think anyone talks about a band that has played the festival over a year ago like we talk about Daft Punk (Except for maybe Radiohead)? I dont know maybe Bonnaroo just seems more......more..... unpersonal, more like it was made to satisfy the masses and not just the music fans. OK thats my rant for the day.......

last year Bright Eyes ended their set and Conor was like, oh, we have another half hour, we need to figure out what to do. He really seemed surprised and unprepared. but then he brought Gillian Welch and David Rawlings and Jim James onstage so maybe he was just pretending. He wears Prada suits now so there's no telling about him.

Are you fucking serious? The Lips and Tool don't even play for 2.5 hours on their headlining gigs (the past couple years, at least). That alone would be worth the trip.

05-25-2007, 11:12 AM
Two and a half hours of the Flips? Damn. They might even get through ten songs. Y'all'd've complain about it for me cause I'd be at Galactic.

Thursday
No problems for this short day. And three fantastic live bands.

Friday
Gillian vs Hot Chip would be tough for me. I mean to say it would be tough missing Hot Chip again. The Black Keys vs the Roots would be unfortunate. Aesop followed by El-P would be bad ass, though.

Saturday
Wow. I don't know that I'd go on Saturday. I mean, sure, Regina. The Hold Steady would be worth seeing. I'm having a hard time caring about the Police playing now a days but I guess I'd be there by default while waiting for Galactic. Or sleeping. And as much as I seem to hate on the Flips I do like them and wouldn't mind seeing them live again.

Sunday
The Decemberists would lose to Martha Wainwright like they lost to Andrew Bird. That's not good. The partial Wilco/Feist overlap is bad.

I'm sure this fest'd be a great time but there'd be fewer acts I wanted to see than for any Coachella since 2001. And that's only cause that was a one day thing.

Wow I didnt realize you could fuck up a festival so bad, there is too much time between bands and all the bands play at the same time instead of spreading it out and not having much downtime. They fucked up. Too many good bands who draw the same crowds playing at the same time. I am glad I went to Coachella and not that bullshit

DOUBLE KICK PEDAL!!!

Yeah there are some overlaps but nothing to get headaches over in my eyes for Bonnaroo. 2 and half hours of Tool is just not fair. I would be happy if they would normally do 2 hours on their own but they do what 90 mins tops? And of course Widespread gets 3 hours, I bet you they even go over, gotta have the jam band close out right? Obviously its cool that the headliner gets a "silent" slot but that just makes conflicts earlier in the day be unavoidable. If they didnt do that some stuff would be spread out a little more and more likely to be conflict free.

The bands play for so freaking long! It seems like there would be a lot less rushing around at Bonnaroo. At the same time, that was half the fun of Coachella. Deciding who to see, and walking from stage to stage, you experience more that way, I would think anyways. I have never been to Bonnaroo. Also, I dont like how they named their stages and tents. Sure, it might be funny. But it seems kind of uncreative and confusing to me.
I am almost tempted to go, just to see Rodrigo y Gabriela play for an hour and half. Tool for 2 and half hours will also be amazing. Gogol Bordello are playing surprisingly early in the afternoon. If they would have played at that time at Coachella, I would be have been dead tired for the rest of the day, but it would have been worth it! If you going to Bonnaroo and missed Gogol at Coachella, do NOT miss Gogol Bordello this time. Oh, conflicting with Regina Spektor? That is a harsh conflict. Either way, I still say go see Gogol Bordello.

I'll wholeheartedly agree with the folks that say Rodrigo y Gabriela are not to be missed. Check YouTube for video from their Coachella set if you are not convinced.

Gillian Welch was my favorite set of the weekend. Hot Chip would be fun but Gillian and David were just stunning. Beautiful music and they amused me endlessly.

I've heard very good things about Feist live. Wilco are a great band but I'm guessing that their latest album - though I like it - will not add wonder and joy to their setlist.

I loved Regina at Coachella. I dismissed Gogol Bordello after a few YouTubes so I'm not the one to ask on that matchup.

From the rest of your list the Black Keys play a blistering live set full of energy and fire. Highly recommended.

I have loved the Decemberists in the past; at Coachella they focused on a few long songs and setpieces (I missed them) which may not be their strength (yet) but I wouldn't ignore them.

I think my friends saw the Nightwatchmen and found them terrible. Or maybe I'm just thinking of listening to some of the album on the way over and my reaction to it.

Dude, don't say that. If they play "No Quarter" or the Salival "Pushit", I'll probably die. I can't imagine how many hippie jokes Maynard will make.

Considering how the number of good acts is a bit limited because of all the jam bands and oldies crap, they really should not be constantly scheduling same-audience bands against each other. If I were going:
Thursday:
The National
Rodrigo y Gabriela
Friday:
Cold War Kids
Tortoise
Hot Chip
The Roots
Tool
DJ Shadow (if still awake)
Saturday:
Gogol Bordello
Ween (half)
Franz Ferdinand
The Police
Flaming Lips
Sunday:
Decemberists
Feist
White Stripes

Not bad, actually. Well, a bunch of those bands are chosen by default and I'm only slightly curious about. Sunday is really weak. But last year there were maybe one or two bands I wanted to see playing Sunday, but not as much as those three.

Gogol Bordello = worst album cover of the year, in a year where almost everyone released a shitty album cover

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y200/frankatcoachella/GOGOLBORDELLO.jpg

I would actually vote that album cover of the year.
They actually played a couple bucket solos at the show, so that album cover makes me happy. Its a great representation of their live show. (I think he also wore those pants at Coachella.)

I loved Regina at Coachella. I dismissed Gogol Bordello after a few YouTubes so I'm not the one to ask on that matchup.

The youtube videos dont do justice for Gogol Bordello. Mainly because the video quality is so crappy. You have to be a Gogol show, to know what its all about. I heard their shows were crazy and fun, and I saw videos, and they looked crazy and fun... but actually seeing them, blew my mind. The lead singer and one of the girls went crowd surfing on a bass drum! The security guards were freaking out the whole time as well, wondering what to do. It was so much fun.
With that being said, my girlfriend saw Regina Spektor and said she was amazing. (I was at Roky Erickson.) Most people I talked too, said Regina was amazing. However, she also saw Gogol. I told her abour the Gogol vs. Regina conflict and Bonnaroo, and she said she would choose Gogol Bordello... easily.
In short, if you wanna chill and just listen to some music. Regina is your girl. If you want to have a blast and see one the most memorable, fun and insane live shows you have ever seen, go check out the Gogol Bordello.
I could go on and on praising their show, and their showmanship... but I think all of you who didnt see them, get the point. And all who saw them, know exactly what I am talking about.

Gillian Welch was awesome.

Decemberists bored me (and I'm a fan)

Fountains of Wayne was pretty good and fun.

i know i'm a couple of days late on this but i've gotta agree with tom - the Decemberists bored the shit out of me at Coachella and I was highly anticipating their set this year....

Tool's setlist:
Jambi
Stinkfist
The Pot
46&2
Schism (extended)
Rosetta Stoned
Flood
Wings For Marie
10,000 Days
Lateralus - with Tom Morello
Vicarious
Aenema

Meh. Except for Lateralus with Tom Morello...that must have been sweet. I wonder why they always play Stinkfist and 46&2 instead of mixing it up with the occasional H. or Sober or Opiate anymore.

yeah, a little dissapointed that Tool didn't mix it up that much...would of been nice if they played Reflection, or The Patient but eh, it's Tool, and that's still a solid set. Can't wait for the recordings to surface.

Maynard did have a few good comments from what I hear, one of which was something like "I took a shower this morning. With soap, hair conditioner. Jealous?"

Also, Tortoise's set is available on etree already, its pretty good.

I don't know what etree is, but do you happen to know Tortoise's setlist? I am seeing the on Thursday and would love to get an idea as to what they will play.
