I think its odd they went from selling out the Wiltern to playing the Troubador. I'll probably make my way over there.

That Girls album might sound fresh and original if you had never heard Elvis Costello sing before.

Did they ever sell out the Wiltern on their own? I saw them there, but they were co-headlining with Mastodon, with Cursive opening

The last show they had in LA was the wiltern, and I'm pretty sure it was sold out... Of the 6 times I've seen them, that was by far the worst.

I just saw them open for the Foo Fighters at the Forum last year and thought they were pretty decent.

damn...yeah, now that i think of it, the last time I saw them was just a little while before New Wave came out. I saw Tom Gabel performing stuff from his solo album exactly one year ago as part of Chuck Ragan's revival show (which I am attending this year's version of tomorrow!!!!) and it wasn't that great

EDIT: Gabel I mean...the rest of the show was amazing

also, when I did see them perform with Mastodon, they were phenomenal. I like Against Me

huh. i never really considered the similarity in their voices. but they definitely have a similar affected quality.

The last time I saw Against Me! was at Coachella... Before that was right after Reinventing... Two entirely different bands.

To be fair, I haven't given the Girls album a fair shake. That was just the first thing that struck me right away during the first few songs.

I was at that show. They only played one song off their album before their latest which was a huge letdow, but my expectations were way too high. I went to that show exclusively for Against Me!.

Nah, it's a good observation.

The album isn't particularly original, it's just great, straight forward pop music.

Yeah. I went to the glass house show on Halloween last year which I guess was okay. I'm not a big Chuck Ragen fan but he has my respect. When I heard Tom Gabel was touring solo, I went crazy, and again I set my expectations too high and was let down. A month later, he did his first headlining show in New York and played every AM! Song I could wish for. It was extremely depressing.

I'm going to agree. Extremely straight forward and very catchy. I don't know if I should get tickets to their Troubador show...

I think practically ANYONE on the board here would have told you to go Pixies over Mum. Just sayin'.

I actually loved Mum at Coachella last year and was expecting something similar. I think I really was just distracted. The rest of the audience seemed into it.

QUESTION: do they have a smoking section at the Palladium now? Back in the day they wouldn't even let you enter with cigs in your pocket and you were basically trapped inside that sweaty hell for 4 hours or until you left

Going for my first time since the renovation in two weeks and am curious

Yep. If you're facing the stage, turn to your left and walk up the stairs and there's a big balcony that overlooks the parking lot.

They have a smoking area also, and they leave the door open so you could see the stage, smoke, and have a drink outside.
