We have probably had this thread before and the answer is EXTREMELY obvious to me, but which area has had the best music come out of it in the past 60 years? I will start us off with the most obvious choice from the U.K.
U.K. The Beatles Radiohead Queen Depeche Mode Bowie Zeppelin Pink Floyd The Smiths The Cure Cream Oasis Blur U2 (MarkO's a cunt) The Police Elvis Costello The Clash The Streets My Bloody Valentine Joy Division Massive Attack Portishead The Chemical Brothers The Prodigy Sex Pistols Underworld Pulp Motorhead Judas Priest The Who Rolling Stones Black Sabbath Gary Numan Stone Roses The Jesus & Mary Chain Iron Maiden The Kinks Roxy Music Buzzcocks, The Jam The Adverts The Damned Wire Stiff Little Fingers The Undertones Editors Bloc Party Babyshambles Keane Franz Ferdinand Snow Patrol Coldplay Muse _______________________ Television, New York Dolls, Richard Hell, Johnny Thunders, MC5, Iggy and the Stooges. U.S. Velvet Underground Scott Walker Bob Dylan Otis Redding Emmylou Harris Nirvana Janis Joplin Jimi Hendrix Miles Davis John Coltrane Elvis Presley Johnny Cash Bruce Springsteen The Beach Boys Pixies The Ramones Madonna Jeff Mangum Run DMC Beastie Boys Public Enemy Talking Heads Pavement Tom Waits Prince BB King Woody Guthrie Chuck Berry Black Flag Minor Threat Creedance Big Black Sonic Youth The Temptations hank williams The Minutemen Al Green Ray Charles James Brown Aretha Franklin Captain Beefheart Frank Zappa Built To Spill Smashing Pumkins Wu Tang Flaming Lips REM Rage Against the Machine Patti Smith Blondie Husker Du X The Misfits Alice in Chains Pavement Dinosaur Jnr Fugazi Sleater-Kinney Wilco Okkervil River My Morning Jacket Neko Case Magnetic Fields Television New York Dolls Richard Hell Johnny Thunder MC5 Iggy and the Stooges Mike Patton Faith No More Mr. Bungle White Stripes LCD Soundsystem Interpol My Morning Jacket Kanye West Animal Collective

I am going to keep a list on the first post of this page keeping track of all the bands named for each area. Just in case this thread takes off.

Download "Scott 4" now! He's a great singer song writer that started with the Walker Brothers... Quit at the height of fame.... and then recorded 4 stellar, and sometimes very strange, records "Scott 1-4." After that he disappeared for 20 years and then resurfaced making avant garde pop music. His latest albums "Tilt" and "The Drift" are unlike anything you've ever heard.

I edited the parameters a bit to include important and influential. I know that is sort of objective, but fuck it.
For example Dr. Dre would be acceptable. Soulja Boy would not. Also, I changed it to 60 years. Edit: Fuck it, anything reasonable goes doesn't matter if it's not influential or important. Soulja Boy is still not acceptable.

It's ironic that Scott Walker should be on as an example of the US, since when he and the Walker Brothers started out, they couldn't get arrested in the US, whereas they were chart toppers in the UK.

The UK and the US have given birth to different genres, so its all in your taste in music. But in the parameters of the last 60 years the UK wins, imo.
