so stoked about this! although having each vehicle searched is going to make for a LONG freaking line if you arrive late in the day Thursday....but i'm really happy about not having to lug a freakingly heavy ice-chest all the way from the car to the campsite this year!

That's gonna save my group a ton of money since we won't have to buy a camping pass for each person. Also dig the in & outs now too.

My question: how is this going to effect the camping groups?

I don't understand, what difference would that make to the camping groups?

This is so lame. You can't leave? What about when we need to go to Wal-Mart or want to get food? Or visit our friends at hotels? I loved the parking lot.
For sure not camping this year, then. |

Yeah, I'm not sure about this...if you have a car, you HAVE to car camp, so we're stuck there the entire time. WTF?

You can park in the general parking & walk your stuff into the camping area.

And pay extra money per day, right? Not worth it.
Also, read the line where it says if yr car is staying overnight, you need to car camp. What are they trying to fucking crack down on? Liquor, I'm assuming. EDIT Quote:

I like being able to go get proper breakfast every morning off-site. |

I dunno, I think the benefits of car camping outweigh the disadvantages. Sure, not being able to drive anywhere all weekend kind of sucks, but you don't have to lug all your stuff from the parking lot to your campsite. Because it's right there. That's pretty cool.
Also, if you really want to go get a real breakfast or In'n'Out or whatever, you can always call a taxi. Or if you're lucky enough to know friends staying in a hotel, they could come pick you up. (I actually think a free shuttle to take campers to and from civilization would be a really great idea, but I seriously doubt that's going to happen.) |

that's what they do at a lot of the camping festivals in australia where you park your car next to your tent, works quite well

I'd trade no ins and outs for not having a fucking car parked right next to me.

It's hard for me to imagine them actually enforcing this rule. Couldn't you just have the first several people that arrive claim all the spots you need, one per person? Then everybody else can arrive later. What, are they gonna tag people to each spot they arrive to and let no one else in? I guess that'll be ironed out when we get more details but it seems like if THAT'S how it's gonna work, it's gonna be hard to enforce it.

the only way I survive coachella is being able to go to Ralphs in the morning for a couple hours....
If I can't leave it will ruin my biggest tradition and essential part of my weekend. |

agreed. i've lived with no ins and outs by being able to go into town in the morning/night for a real bathroom and showering at my friends' hotels.

I have car camped, it was amazing. TRUST IT. It works nicely, but yes, you have to coordinate, it will make the camping groups different for sure...
But yeah, it was an amazing experience at Phish, and I feel it would be very similar to the Roo and other festivals that have you car camp...

it also sounds like anyone who comes without a car can camp for free.. either meet some friends with extra space (10x30 per every person with a car is a lot of extra space).. every dude with a blunt is gonna end up finding a cozy little spot for a small tent..

I know I am copying some of this from my FB status update, and I will mention it a few times coming up, as this is how it was done @ phish...
But your group meets together ahead of time, say we all set a rally point to be the Costco Parking Lot off the 111, and say we will go into the campgrounds at 4pm on thursday, so EVERYONE shows up at that spot, and then drives in together. Doing this means that if you can get 8-16, to say, 30 cars, whatever our number, we can basically all camp together as a huge group, with our cars, everything. Then, we just make that be the central group location, and text message out that location to everyone else, and they park their cars and set up their little mini camps, and then meet up at the main site!! Triple Bonus points if one of us ponies up the cash for an RV or Two.

Lol, and the same as the endless drum circles... But remember, you are next to your car, so you can climb into your backseat and fall asleep with the windows and doors closed if you need your peace and quiet...
